New computer migration

Thread needs solution

Good morning.  I use Acronis 2017 and have restored to my computer running Windows 7 64 many times successfully.   I just purchased a new computer runnning Windows 10 64.  I really do not care if the new computer runs 7 or 10.  Can I use my rescue CD to restore everything from an external drive to the new computer?  Will I have progarm activation issues since this is an entirely different computer?

Thanks Mike

Mike, the answer to your question is 'it depends' - it depends on what you are wanting to restore, it depends on the differences between the old and new computer hardware, the difference in the BIOS boot method used for the two computers....

If you want to restore user data from the old computer to the new one, then no problem.

Acronis products cannot be used to move programs or applications to a different computer.

To move an existing Windows installation (OS, Programs and Data) from your old computer to the new one, then this will at a minimum require the use of the Acronis Universal Restore utility which is required to prepare the restored Windows OS to work with the new hardware in the new computer.  There is no guarantee that your old Windows OS will work correctly on the new hardware - as you need to match a number of key points as indicated above.  The disk controller mode used on both computers should match, i.e. AHCI on both systems, the BIOS should either both be MBR / Legacy or UEFI on both systems.  There is also the issue of Windows Activation - if you current Windows OS is an OEM version then this is licensed only for use on the system where it is currently activated.  This is a little easier if both systems use Windows 10 as this is licensed for the hardware and both systems will have a valid license.  Other programs may also give activation issues if they are licensed based on the hardware signature of the system where they are currently installed.
