Passwords

Thread needs solution

I just bought Acronis 2017, installed it and everything went fine.  But it won't let met change my password from the one that was generated by the software.  I did a copy and paste of the generated password and when I try to change the password it says my current password is invalid.  I have no idea on how to change my password now, and the one that was generated for me is no longer in cut and paste memory.  Help ... please.

Gary, welcome to these user forums.

When you speak about the password generated by the software, where are you looking at this?
I suspect that you are seeing this in the Advanced settings page of your backup task, and if so, the default password is no password.

You can test this by trying to go into the settings for your backup task.  If there is a password set then you will be asked to enter this, otherwise you will be able to change or view the settings without being prompted for a password.

Once a password is set, if you forget that password then no-one, including Acronis, can provide it for you.  Your choice is to either to try to remember / quess what you may have put, or else delete and create a new backup.

Once a backup is run you cannot set or change a password. The password is forever static in each backup job. Why, you may ask, that seems unfriendly or dumb. The reason is the password info is stored in the backup tib files as part of the internal meta data. This cannot be modified in the existing backup files so if you could change the password you would have to remember several to recover one job.

long story short... set the backup password from the beginning. If you want a password, copy the backup settings and create a new backup task and set the password before you run it.
