Problems with 2017 "tools Secure Zone" hangs up and do not work

Thread needs solution

Just upgraded from Acronis 2016 to Acronis 2017. Installation went well, created a disk backup from the current configuration including all updated software.

Using backup restore under Acronis 2017, restored to drive C from the previously done backup dated May 25.

After reboot, the system was caught in a never ending loop in the UEFI Loader, able to activate through F11 Acronis . The system kept coming up with the same message again and again and did not proceed with bolting.

Finally I was able to solve the problem by restoring the UEFI partition from June 6, 2016 from an older disk backup.

Therefore my suspicion is that the installation of Acronis 2017 may have corrupted the UEFI petition.

The issue: Access on tools Acronis Secure Zone do not work.

Now trying to create a new secure zone on my 500GB SSD Drive, Acronis 2017 is stuck at initialization (message on the screen = initializing)  and will not open the secure zone tool.

  1. Has anyone seen this problem, and how can this be recovered, as I need to create a new version of the backup on the Acronis secure zone on the SSD hard drive.
  2. Should have Acronis 2016 be removed from the system before upgrading to the new version?
  3. Is it possible that the installation process of Acronis 2017 corrupts the UEFI partition?

Any help is really appreciated. Thank you very much…..Francois

Francois, I have not personally seen any problems where ATIH 2017 has corrupted the UEFI partition, but have to question how you performed the OS restore?

The recommendation from the MVP's is to only do this type of OS restore / recovery by using the standalone bootable Acronis Rescue Media (on CD or USB stick) as this avoids any problems that can be encountered by starting such a restore from within Windows, then requiring Acronis to modify the Windows Boot configuration data in order to create a temporary Linux boot environment from which to launch ATIH.

The problem with the ASZ (secure zone) may well have been caused by restoring the older version of the EFI Partition which perhaps didn't have a ASZ or it was of a different size?

If you do not need to keep the ASZ contents, then you could simply delete the hidden partition and try starting again - you could try doing this from Windows Disk Management, but personally I would use a partition tool such as the free MiniTool Partition Wizard.

If you need to try to keep the ASZ contents, then try booting from the Acronis Rescue Media and see if this will allow you to reinstate the ASZ and set the correct partition pointers to this.  If this doesn't offer a solution, then I would recommend opening a Support Case directly with Acronis for this issue.

Hi Steve, many thanks. I guess you are right with tjhe restore of teh older vfersion. I will proceed with your suggestion and wipe teh ASZ using a partition tool I own.  I will keep yopu posted.

Hi Steve,

I proceeded according to your suggestions and it worked. I had however to create a rescue USB stick to be able to remove the old ASZ.
I still don't understand how the UEFI partition could have changed, but anyway.

Unfortunately when I want to activate another tool on acronis 2017, it is caught in a loop initializing and will not start the tool at all. For example System Clean-up.

May be something did not install correctly when I upgraded.

Francois, it may be worth trying a Repair install of ATIH 2017 which means just reinstalling it again over the top of the current installed software to let it correct any DLL registrations, registry entries etc.

If that doesn't clear things up, then a clean install may be needed, but try the repair first.

Hi Steve, will get a try, as the new tools seems interesting it is worthwhile. Will keep you updated.
