Question about backup

Thread needs solution

Clicking on "start", then "computer, it shows 47.4GB free of 452GB. Back up "entire PC" showed 416GB selected. However, after making the backup, it showed 371.3GB backed up. This took a little over 2 hours and 16 minutes. Running the validation showed that it was successful. Was the difference between the 416GB selected, and the 371.3GB backed up, due to compression? Actual file size of the backup shows as 309GB. I don't understand the numbers. Does this appear to be normal, or might there be a problem?

Ed, there can be a number of reasons for the difference in size, especially if doing the backup from within Windows where the Acronis task Exclusions will come into play.

The Windows system files - pagefile.sys, swapfile.sys and hiberfil.sys plus System Volume Information (where restore point data is stored) are all excluded by default and could easily account for 20 - 30GB or more.

Ed, I would say yes but if you want to check what has been excluded, then mount the backup image as a drive letter then run a file comparison utility or do a check on the larger file / folder sizes using such as TreeSize Free.
