Restore files from corrupt backup

Thread needs solution

Hello all,

I'm trying to restore files from a presumably corrupted backup file.

After I made the settings for the path where to restore the data, there are a lot of popup windows telling me i.e.

'Failed to recover fie or folder'

The dialog gives me the options Retry, Ignore and Cancel

The backup file is about 250GB in size and contains a rather large amount of files.

It's a rather old backup, but I wanted to recover some files out of it before I delete the backup file.

Is there a setting that ignores all read-errors during restore and restore only intact files but without the need to click on ignore for all defective files ?

Any hint is highly appreciated.

Best ragrds,

MBach, welcome to these user forums.

Do you know which version of ATIH was used to create the backup image you are trying to restore files from?  Or if not, what is the date of the image file / when was it created?

How are you trying to restore the files?  Is this from within the main ATIH application or are you mounting the image or exploring it with Windows / File explorer?

Have you tried to validate the backup image?

I would recommend running CHKDSK /F /R against the backup drive where the backup image is stored to ensure that there are no bad sectors on that drive.

In addition to Steve's advice, make sure to recover to a different location than the original.  If this is all user data (documents, music, movies, pictures, etc - then this should work to the extent of the data that is not corrupted).  restoring to a temporary location (like a new folder on the desktop or some other drive, instead of trying to restore over the original location, may help some too. As STeve mentioned, there is some compatibility to look out for with older backup vesions too so you may need to use an offline recovery media with the older backup if it's not supported in the currently installed version of Acronis.
