Restoring an image after make a backup using vss-service

Thread needs solution

Have anyone tested if its possible to restore

an Image with ATI on a Windows machine including

latest updates from Microsoft?

I have found this:

https://www.tenforums.com/general-support/77514-file-system-filter-wcif…

I have those warnings in windows event viewer

too and I am not sure if Acronis is longer working

as it should.

Uwe, the reference to the tenforums site would suggest that this is an issue introduced by Microsoft with one of their latest Windows updates and the advice being offered is along the lines of 'wait for Microsoft to fix this issue'.

I would recommend using the Log Viewer to check what your Acronis backup task logs show with regards to any backups you have created that were made from within Windows and default to using VSS - check for any errors that are shown, but I would expect the backup to have failed is VSS had a significant problem.

With the latest build 8029 you now have additional Advanced options to switch from backing up with VSS to using other options, including the Acronis snapshot function.
See KB 59440: Acronis True Image 2017: 'Snapshot for backup' option overview for details of the new options.

Providing that the backup image file was created successfully then there should be no issue in restoring that image as this should always be performed using the Acronis Rescue Media, fully outside of Windows.

I havent' tested a recovery, but will sometime this weekend to see how it goes.  To be on the safeside, do a full "offline" backup outside of Windows first and then try restoring a backup that was taken from Windows as this is where the issue would come into play.  If that fails to be bootable, then restore from your offline backup, which should not be impacted by such a Windows error/issue.  Better yet, test this on a different drive than the original - restore to different disk and pull the original - just in case.  If it really isn't working, you can pop that back in.

If this is a  Windows bug, it would impact all backup programs that rely on VSS - I recently restored to a VM without issue, but I'll try again - just to be sure.

Alternatively, with the 2017NG and latest standard release  that came out this week, you can disable VSS and use the proprietary Acronis backup method as well, which should not be impacted by any newly introduced Microsoft VSS issues (if they are wide-spread).
