Scanning before backing up
Hi Everyone,
Just bought ATI2017, and 500GB of cloud space for off-site backups.
On the progress bar during a backup, it says 'Scanning... 114GB of 278GB', and stays there for a couple of minutes at a time. After a while, 'Scanning' changes to 'Backing up...', the upload speed reaches ~50Mbps briefly before creeping back down, then returns to scanning.
I have investigated as far as i could: During scanning, i see 0% disk activity in, but i do see see activity when ATI says Backing Up.
- I assume during scanning, nothing is being uploaded? I still see network activity in Windows' Task Manager performance tab, curiously enough.
- What does scanning do? Is this normal to take a while?
Settings:
- File and Folders back up to Acronis Cloud from a USB3 disk (does contain some large files)
- In the System Tray, i have Priority set to High
Thank you in advance for any help in this :)

My interpretation of Scanning is that TI2017 compare files to see which file/s to leave alone and which file/s to upload. TI2017 scans after changes between local targeted files and the files in the cloud. Files that has not been changed since the last backup will not be uploaded again and files that have been changed, or files that have been added, are being uploaded. I don´t know if it scans for file date or file zise or both. AFAIK no files are being uploaded during the Scanning phase.
Someone else may chime in and correct me if i am wrong. :)

This is the very first, initial scan if that is relevant.

My answer was for the initial scan. :)
I rarely see those scannings in the middle of uploading but i have for sure seen they happening. They always seems to happen when the connection for some reason is interrupted. I have seen what you see, iow that when the upload suddenly stops in the middle of an upload and that TI2017 goes back to Scanning again. I am not sure, but maybe the scanning process starts again once the connection has been interrupted in some way to make sure that the files that need to be uploaded really is uploaded. Just guessing/assuming here.

Thanks, Roger - i should have refreshed the page so i saw your reply. I will let the initial upload finish the see what happens then. Still have 1 day 15 hours to go though :)

Barthandelus, please ensure that you are also making local backups as well as backing up to the Cloud - this will help you to make a faster recovery should you need to do so, assuming that you don't suffer a catestrophic situation such as a house fire etc that takes out all local systems & backups. You could still apply your Cloud backups to your system recovered from the local backup(s) to recover any further changes stored in the Cloud.

Thanks Roger, that is a very good point - i didnt think of that! I have a NAS drive that i will keep a local backup on. Thanks for the suggestion!

Local backup as well as Cloud backup is best. It takes much longer to do recocry from the Cloud. I have done so several times over the years. I treat the Cloud backup as a fail-safe.
