Shopping for a USB Stick for Acronis Bootable Media

Thread needs solution

I apologize beforehand.  I have done due diligence.  Searching for "Acronis Bootable Media" on Google, or these forums, or the KB gets me 10lbs of cruft (links from 2009 mostly).  So here goes.. big questions..

How big a USB stick do I need to create a Acronis Bootable Media suitable for booting from my Dell laptop to perform a disk cloning procedure?

I bought a lovely 30GB SanDisk USB 3.0 stick today at Wal*mart.  Will 30GB be enough?

Of course when I got it home, I noticed the package appeared to have been opened.  My paranoid side figured either:

  1. Someone pulled the stick out of the package, used it once, then returned it to Wal* Mart
  2. A black hat took it home, slyly opened it up, then loaded a virus (or god knows what), put the stick back in, then returned it to Wal*mart for some sucker to load.

Too busy to return it, I double BitSweeped (or whatever the State Dept does) it and formatted it exFat.  Good to go..

I plan on somehow getting my new Dell Inspiron 15 3000 series laptop to look at my USB stick before the hard drive to boot up, then copy all partitions (including the secret Dell recovery partition) from my original laptop drive to a blank drive in the Dell.

30GB is more than enough. I have mine on a 16GB flash drive.

Claveman,

The largest USB flash drive that will support Acronis boot media is 32 Gb.  Please see:

Boot media will easily fit on an 8Gb flash drive.

I have used a 1GB USB stick for rescue media with no issues, especially if that is the only purpose for the drive.

OK.  I am ready to create my "Acronis boot media" to use to boot my laptop.

Once booted, I plan on cloning my laptop disk onto an external USB drive of equal or larger size.

I have launched Acronis True Image 2017.  I see no menu option to create an "Acronis boot media" on a USB stick.

I have downloaded a file "AcronisTrueImage2017.iso".  I think that is a DVD image for the software should I wish to make a DVD.

I see references in the True Image menu "Tools" to make a "ACRONIS BOOTABLE RESCUE MEDIA".

Does " ACRONIS BOOTABLE RESCUE MEDIA" also mean "Acronis boot media"?

I see 2014 YouTube videos for True Image on how to make a Acronis boot media, but the menu's are all different now.

Please help.

Thanks

Yes that is the choice you want. One of the choices under that selection will be to create a USB bootable drive. Plug the flash drive in first to see that choice.

OK.  Thank you.

Funny..  The 2017 menu text is same as 2016 menu text but different case.  2016 is "MEDIA.."  2017 is "Media.."

Tools -> Rescue Media Builder --> Choose bootable media type
Select: ACRONIS BOOTABLE RESCUE MEDIA
Choose media destination ->
(You can create bootable CD, DVD, USB flash drive, or build an .iso image)
1. ISO file
2. USB     xxx (your name of your USB drive)
Drive:  x: (Windows drive letter (not x) that Acronis True Image 2017 found)

Select either ISO or USB (if no USB drive mounted/connected the USB option is not shown).

For Acronis True Image 17, the bootable media size (USB) size is 605MB
