Suddenly getting write errors
New to version of Acronis 17, but used an earlier version successfully a number of years ago on another machine. After doing about a dozen uneventful backups, it has suddenly started to fail. Initially I was seeing the "quotas are violated" error, as the backup drive (2T) was marginal in available space. Corrected that, I now have about 627GB in free space, and the initial (and only) backup I still have is about 240GB, so a new one should be fine, at least space-wise. The most recent backup was manual, which also failed, citing the quotas error, which may be generic, dunno, but now shows two different write error codes. It may well be time to replace it as I've had it for a goodly while, but not sure. I've used it as a simple file backup location and have not had any problems with it until now.
TIA
Elaine

Elaine, the Bitmap error message is one that does need to be fixed if your data on the drive is going to be saved.
I would recommend running CHKDSK with the /F option to try to fix the problem but if you are concerned about data on the drive, then if you have another drive, you could try to copy some of that data to the second drive.
If you are concerned over the general health of the drive, then go to the drive manufacturers support web site and look for any diagnostic tools that they offer which can be used to verify the drive health.
You may also want to consider doing CHKDSK /R against the drive to check that there are no bad sectors present but be aware that this can run for a significant amount of time on larger drives.

In reply to Elaine, the Bitmap error… by truwrikodrorow…

Thanks, Steve! Is the bitmap error something that can cause the Acronis error? As noted, it's a new error. I will try the fix, but given the age of the device, I may look into simply replacing it. I'll also go to the website, too. Definiely can't hurt.

Elaine, yes if there are issues with the MFT (Master File Table) this is where details are recorded for where files are stored and will cause various strange problems, including potentially indicating that there is insufficient free space when actually there should be plenty!
If you are not worried about losing the contents of the backup drive, then doing a full format of the drive would also clear up this type of bitmap error.
