TI 2017/Windows 7 - Scheduler service not starting at boot time

Thread needs solution

Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, TI 2017 build 8053

Just in the last week, the scheduler service has failed to start at boot time on two mornings. Event log entries for Service Control Manager say

The Acronis Scheduler2 Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

and

A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Acronis Scheduler2 Service service to connect.

[Event ID 7000 and 7009]

I can't find anything else in the event logs related to the service.

It's only failed twice, on Nov 10 and Nov 11. It started at boot time this morning. If  I start the TI 2017 program when the scheduler is not running, it starts the scheduler itself without incident. Starting the scheduler from the management console also worked normally.

Suggestions?

Bert, was there something else running on your computer at the same time that may have taken CPU cycles away from the Acronis Scheduler service to prevent it from starting correctly?

If the problem is intermittent then this may be the case but otherwise, I can only suggest trying a Repair Install of ATI 2017 running as Administrator.  This is done by reinstalling over the top of the existing application without uninstalling first.

It happened at boot time when there's always a lot going on, but nothing that hasn't been going on before, as far as I can tell. And, it's only happened twice, but both within the past few days.

On a hunch (or a whim), I changed the startup for the scheduler service to Automatic - Delayed Start. This will hold its start until all other Automatic start services are running normally. If there is something getting in its way during boot, having it wait a bit might help. Or, it might make it worse.

I vaguely recall that I can find and download the latest build somewhere on the Web site. Is that in a form that will allow a repair install? And just where do I find it, if I'm remembering correctly?

Hi, it's me again ... I found where the downloads are supposed to come from, but that doesn't seem to work.

From my account products list (https://account.acronis.com/#/products)  I found TI 2017 and selected "Downloads" where it offered me build 8058 (which is higher than the 8053 build I currently have, which is odd), but when trying to download it, I get

Unable to connect

Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at download.acronis.com.

Same for build 8053. So, where is it, if I need it?

Bert. You are in the correct location (your account). I was just able to login and begin the download for TI 2017. Sounds like some issue with the download site or the connection itself. Try again.

You should download the full version, rather than the wed version. Not sure why you are having difficulty with the download. Please keep us informed of your progress.

You can also try downloading from the this page: you have to expand the listing to get the links for older versions of ATI such as 2017. These links are to the full installers.

Ian

I was never able to download from my Windows 7 machine, but I moved over to my Windows 10 system and downloaded without incident. Odd. Also found that my Windows 10 system has build 8058 installed, rather than the 8053 on my Windows 7 machine; maybe this is related to the inability to download.

Anyway, I updated the Windows 7 machine to build 8058 yesterday.

I realized that I've violated a cardinal rule of debugging software in changing more than one thing at a time, but the scheduler service started as it should this morning.

It's quite possible that none of this is related, but caused by some other process running at boot time that simply got in other people's way.

So, I guess that's it. If nothing else, this did get me up to the last TI 2017 build, which should hold me until I decide to move up to a new version in the future.

Thanks for humoring me.

Bert, thanks for the update / feedback, hope that all continues to behave as expected!
