Unable to restore disk or partition.

Thread needs solution

I'm wanting to restore a recent backup of a Windows 10 OS; it's 64bit Pro. Have had Acronis installed since 2017 and never needed to use is until now. When attempting to recover either an entire disk or a particular partition from a recent backup, the program will restart and a screen with a progress bar appears along with the word, "Preparing". The progress bar does not indicate any progress at all; the only thing I'll see is "..." "..." "..." for 5 or so minutes before the programs reboots my PC and I'm left with what I'd started with, i.e., no restoration or recovery. For what it's worth, I've tried recovering the entire disk which in addition to Windows, includes miscellaneous partitions; recovery, UEFI, etc. Tried recovering just the "C" (Windows) partition... no luck there, either. After starting the recovery, my PC will reboot and and again, all it does is display "Preparing" and "..." "..." "..." until it my PC reboots back into Windows.  ??? Thanks!!

David, sorry but the first rule for recovering any backup of your Windows OS is not to try to do this by starting from the Windows ATI GUI application.

Please create the Acronis bootable Rescue Media for doing this type of recovery and use this to boot your computer in the BIOS boot mode that matches how your Windows OS boots.

Run the command: msinfo32 from the Windows desktop and check what the BIOS mode shows - this should show UEFI if you have an EFI system partition as mentioned above, therefore the rescue media needs to use this mode too.

See KB 59877: Acronis True Image: how to distinguish between UEFI and Legacy BIOS boot modes of Acronis Bootable Media for more information.

See KB 58816: Acronis True Image 2017: Creating Acronis Bootable Media - and KB 59184: Acronis True Image 2017: How to create a WinPE-based bootable media for more information on creating the media.

The MVP Custom ATI PE builder script can also be used to create the WinPE rescue media.
