"Used space" differ before and after whole disk recovery

Thread needs solution

I just ran a test recovery and was surprised to see the "Used space" was different before and after.  See the attached photo.  I did a whole disk recovery from the latest incremental file of the set.  Acronis said the recovery was successful.  But, why the different "Used space" before and after?Acronis before and after used space.jpg

Donald, welcome to these User Forums.

The simple answer to your question is that Acronis does not backup all used data when you make a full disk backup.

If you check your backup task configuration and in particular look at the Options > Exclusions page you will see that such as the large system files - pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys & swapfile.sys are all excluded by default - these can take up many GB's of space and are rebuilt automatically by Windows on boot.

System Volume Information is also excluded by default - this also can be many GB's in size and is where Windows stores snapshot and system restore point information.

Together, the above could account for the difference you have seen.
