What does "Store No More XX Than Recent Version Chains" means?

Thread needs solution

Hello,

Can someone please explain to me what "Store No More XX Than Recent Version Chains" means and some rough setting guidelines or what people have generally used?  Thanks in advance.

Scott, the 'Store no more than xx recent version chains" controls how automatic cleanup works.

A version chain = 1 x full plus all associated incremental or differential files for the same backup version sequence, i.e. those files sharing the same stem name and the same _b?_ number.

A new version chain is created when a new full backup is successful, at which point this setting is checked.  If the number of version chains now exceeds the xx value set, then the oldest version chain is deleted.

This tends to be my preferred setting for automatic cleanup where I normally set xx = 2 and use the default options to create a new full backup (= new version chain) after creating 5 incremental backups.
