Which downloads are needed?

Thread needs solution

When I upgraded to 2017 there were three files to download. One was for Windows, one for MAC and one was unnamed. I am not using the cloud and only want to have a back up for my computer.

Do I need the unnamed file??

I'm not sure what the unnamed file is - a screenshot perhaps?  I have a feeling it was for "universal restore". Universal restore is not required.  However, if you plan to image your system and make it bootable on a different computer, then you would want the universal restore application as it will be added to your offline reocvery media during the media build process if you have it installed already.

There's also a .iso of the recovery media you can download which can be burned to a CD or DVD.  You can create your own .iso, or burn directly to a CD/DVD, or create a bootable recovery usb drive from within the Acronis media builder option so you don't have to download the .iso file.

Once you grab the installer from your account, right click on it and "run as administrator" to give it the hightest permissions possible (even if logged in with an admin account already).

Ned, the only available downloads in my Acronis account for ATIH 2017 are the installers for Windows or MAC plus the bootable CD/DVD image file (.ISO) to use to burn the Rescue Media for recovery.  See screen shot below.

Thanks Steve, I do an "Entire PC" backup to a removable Seagate drive every month. I just upgraded to Acronis 2017. When I was offered the chance to download the DVD image file (iso) I ddn't do it. There is only about 50GB of use on my hard drive as I only use this for documents and emails.

Do you think I need that (.iso)  file to recover my PC?

If so, how can I now download that file?

Ned, the Acronis bootable Rescue Media (same as the .ISO file offered in your downloads) can be created directly on your own computer by using the Bootable Rescue Media Builder application.  You can find this in the ATIH GUI in the Tools section, or go directly to it via the Start menu > All Programs > Acronis > True Image > Tools.

The application offers you a choice of two types of Rescue Media - the default, Linux OS based, media which is the same as the ISO file, or a Windows PE version of the media which will require an additional download of the Microsoft ADK files needed for the Windows PE creation - the ADK files are around 3GB in size to download / install.

For most users, the standard Rescue Media is sufficient for their recovery needs but you should test booting from this at some time to check that it recognises your system hardware and disk drives, and will boot correctly.  Better to find out now than when you want to use it in an emergency.

Many thanks Steve,

In your last paragraph you menioned the standard Rescue Media. Is that part of Acronis 2017?

How can I make a test booting to see if it works. I have a Dell with W10 and attach the backup Seagate drive with a usb cord.
