You don't currently have permission to access this folder.

Thread needs solution

I have Acronis True Image 2017 running on my Windows 10 (Anniversary update) desk top computer.  I have mounted an Acronis backup (.tib) file as a hard drive by right clicking on the file in File Explorer.  When I try to access some of the folders that are in my backup I get the following message:

You don't currently have permission to access this folder.
Click Continue to permanently get access to this folder.

Clicking Continue is not successful, I believe that this is because the backup drive is mounted read only.

I have searched the Acronis forum for a solution and the first step to resolving the issue in the solutions that I have seen, is to mount the backup as read / write.  I have tried to do this but I can not find an option to mount as read / write when I right click the backup (.tib) file.

Thanks for any assistance.

Marc, welcome to these user forums.

The most likely cause for your permissions issue with the mounted backup file is that the backup was created on a different system with a different user profile to that which you are using to try to open / access folders with.

There is no means of opening or mounting the backup file in read/write mode, that has not been available for many years in ATIH.

You could use the option in ATIH 2017 to Add the backup file as an existing backup file and then take the Recovery options to restore just the folders you want to access but using the further option to not restore the permissions for that folder.

See the ATIH 2017 User Guide:

File recovery options

You can select the following file recovery options:

  • Recover files with their original security settings - if the file security settings were preserved during backup (see File-level security settings for backup), you can choose whether to recover them or let the files inherit the security settings of the folder where they will be recovered to. This option is effective only when recovering files from file/folder backups.

The option to mount read/write was removed in 2015 and has not returned.  Instead of mounting as a drive, can you double click on the backup .tib file and copy/paste from Windows file explorer that way instead?  Haven't seen this behavior in 2017 yet, so might be worth sending feedback with a system report and opening a technical support case to see if Acronis can identify the cause/behavior.
