Acronis Disk Cloning Restrictions

Thread needs solution

Acronis disk cloning states that,

cloning "requires the SAME disk space as the original"

and "disk clones cannot be updated with new data".

The reason I am looking into acronis is because I want to upgrade my SSD to higher storage. Plus I plan to increase the data stored on my new disk.

Because of what the website states, should I not proceed with Acronis?

Elliot, welcome to these User Forums.

To clarify the statements you quoted: "requires the SAME disk space as the original" - this is true only for the actual data located on the source disk drive, i.e. if you have a disk of say 120GB in size but only 60GB of that drive is used to store your Windows OS, applications and user data, then you could potentially clone to a new disk of any size from around 80GB and larger - to any disk that can accommodate the size of source data.

"disk clones cannot be updated with new data" - I would recommend reading the document linked in my signature that deals with the  Difference between Backup and Disk Clone as this gets to the heart of this statement.

When you make a disk clone, you make exactly that, an identical duplicate copy of the source disk on a second disk.  In order to do this, all data on the target drive is wiped in preparation for duplicating the data.  This in effect precludes being able to update a disk by using the cloning process but if you use the Disk Backup function, then you can schedule backup tasks and make full, incremental and/or differential backup image files.  Backup & Recovery can also be used as an alternative method to using Cloning.
