Acronis not deleting older backups

Thread needs solution

The programme runs OK for several weeks then fails to complete a backup due to a 'write error'  If I am using the PC when the backup is running it tells me that there is insufficient space.  In my settings, it is to create a full version after 8 incremental versions and store no more that 2 recent version chains.

This happens despite an entry showing that 720.4GB was freed up the day before the first failed backup.  I am having to delete previous backups to get it back on track.

jaktarr01, welcome to these public User Forums.

Sorry but more information will be needed to understand this issue?

What are the actual sizes of your backup version chains (Full plus 8 Incremental files)?

What is the size of your backup drive being used to store these version chains.

What else is stored on the same backup drive?

Have you set any value on the Notifications options page to "Show notification message on insufficient free disk space", if so, what value have you set?

I  have added two screenshots that should answer the questions regarding sizes.  The backups are directed to a separate 1TB drive that has a partition with Win7 on it but nothing else.

The notification is set when disk space is less than 100 MB

Hope this information is sufficient.

Thanks for the screen shots.

Your G: Acronis Backups drive shows only 162.98GB free space remaining of 830GB size.

Your Backup version chains (Full + 8 Incr) adds up to around 300GB per chain.

Your file list shows 3 chains with identifiers B30, B31, B32 and a new B33 chain being started which suggests that you have changed the automatic cleanup rule if you say it is now to store no more than 2 recent chains!

Another change looks to be the number of increments as there are 10 such for the B30 chain, so that chain is potentially larger than 300GB in size.

All the above adds up to why you are out of space on that drive.

To address this, you will need to do some manual cleanup of the oldest backup chain files for B30 (and any other earlier chain files if present), then run a Validation for the task that created the cleaned up files.  The validation is needed to reconcile the information held in the Acronis Database files for your backup task.  Take the cancel or ignore option for each popup for a deleted file.

Automatic cleanup only runs when a new Full backup has been created successfully for a new chain, so with only 830GB drive space and a chain size of 300GB, you will either need to reduce your number of chains being held or the size of data involved in the backup.

To store no more than 2 recent chains, you need space to store approximately 900GB of data before the oldest 300GB chain is removed from the drive.
