Acronis True Image 2018. I keep getting a disk full message when the destination disk (3TB) still has over 1TB free and the source disk is only 343GB. I have tried a number of times with the same result. Initially it happened about a quarter of the way through the backup but now the message comes up when I press the start backup button.I run Windows 10 and both disk are Seagate disks, the source being an SSD.
System
Windows 10; 16GB RAM; 500GB SSD Seagate HD source, 3TB Seagate destination. The system is a desk top computer.

Steve,
Thank you. I have checked the notifications and I didn't have any value set. On the assumption that it should be set to the default 100 GB I have ticked this option. I will attempt another backup tomorrow.
In the meantime the MVP Log Viewer gave the following report:

Can you see any reason for the 'Disk Full' message?

On the assumption that it should be set to the default 100 GB I have ticked this option.
Pete, sorry if my screen image misled here, the default is 100 MB but is not enabled by default!
Looking at the log messages, I would recommend running CHKDSK J: /F as it is likely that there is a free space error with the filesystem on that drive if you are seeing over 1TB of free space and being given this error.

A couple of other thoughts - just to be sure, is the backup a full disk backup or "entire system" backup? Just making sure it's not trying to backup additional disks that may be internal. I can't tell from the log excerpt, so just wanted to verify.
Also, although the Seagate has 1TB left and the new full backup should be 300GB or less with compression, I wonder if disk defragmentation could be an issue. The problem I see with using the default setting for Acronis to create the backup size is that it will try to make the backup file one large, CONTIGUOUS file. If the destination drive is fragmented, and can't find a CONTIGUOUS block large enough to accommodate that large file, in theory, it should break it into smaller pieces. Perhaps it is unable to in this case though? A quick test would be to set the backup .tib size to something smaller (say Blu-ray size of 25GB) and then run the backup and see if it is able to complete or not. If it can, then we may have found the issue.

Steve and Bobbo,
I have actually set the size to 100 MB and I have done CHKDSK /R on both disks and received clear results. One point which may have an influence is that I refuse to use Cloud and have never signed into it. Surely I do not need Cloud to simply do a backup disk to disk. I shall do a defrag of my destination disk and see if that helps. I have paid for a service (Acronis True Image) and yet that service refuses to work.

Pete, the Cloud is totally optional and not a requisite for doing any local backups!

Yup, cloud is not required, but all depends on whether you purchase a standalone license or a cloud subscription. Either way, once licensed, local backups are not dependent of any cloud services.
We're still a bit in the dark on some of the settings too. For instance, whether the source is "entire PC" or the specific full disk.
With running chkdsk, any errors should hopefully be fixed that might be requiring a sector by sector backup as well, but the backup logs could provide some more detail too.
This really isn't an issue for most people, but there is something causing this behavior in your case so any extra information we can use to help identify the problem would be helpful. Entirely up to you though - Steve and I are customers/users like you too and offering up time to assist. Alternatively, you can submit an official ticket to Acronis technical support and work with them as well.

Steve/Bobbo,
Thank you both for your help. As you can probably guess I am an old bloke who is not as computer savvy as I would like to be.
I always do full backups from a pc drive to an external backup drive doing only one drive at a time per backup. I keep the two latest copies for each of my working drives and delete any older copies. I am in the process now of doing a defrag on the 3 TB target drive. The defrag program tells me that there is 54% fragmentation in two files that total 969.5 GB. The defrag is a very slow business. My previous version of Acronis True Image was 2017 and it worked like a charm. Unfortunately I threw my copy of 2017 out along with a lot of other superseded programs. My copy of 2018 is a 'stand-alone'. I shall just have to persevere.
Bobbo, you suggested that I should try a test by setting the 'backup .tib' to about a Blu-ray size. Do you mean that I should attempt to backup something as small as about 25 GB? I have a blank drive that I could put about 25 - 30 GB on and try a backup. So perhaps I will try that as soon as my pc is free after the defrag. Thanks again.

Pete, fragmentation can be an issue as already mentioned by Rob (Bobbo) earlier. The quickest way to resolve fragmentation is actually to format the whole drive but please only do this if you have a backup held on another drive, as you would be erasing everything on the drive being formatted.
The size splitting for your backup is in the Advanced Options page for your backup task where the default setting is 'Automatic' but where you can select one of a variety of set sizes that correspond with CD, DVD and BluRay disc sizes, or use a custom size, i.e. you could set a size of 40GB per file segment.
There is no need to try to make a backup of something else here.
With regard to your older versions of ATI such as 2017, then if you registered this to your Acronis Account, you can still download the installer program for that version and install it if needed, or else download an ISO (CD) image of the 2017 Rescue media to burn to a CD disc.

Steve / Bobbo,
I thank you guys for your dedication to helping twits like me fathom my way through Acronis.
I took your advice and move any important stuff from the drive and formatted it. I then did four full backups of my other drives and all went smoothly.
All is now well.
Once again thank you.
Sincerely,
Peter Cupitt

Pete, glad to hear that the drive format has solved this strange issue. The only 'twits' are those who never ask for or seek help, and you are definitely not in that category!

Ditto to Steve. Pete, glad all is well now and hope it stays that way. Always happy to try and help out!

I agree with Steve and Bob on this - there is no such thing as a "twit" question. If in doubt always seek advice from the Acronis community.
