Archive functions saves also to AppData

Thread needs solution

Why is that the archiving process saves a copy of what I want archived to the Acronis folder in AppData? I thought the point was to remove files not in use to the cloud. Can I delete these files?

ScottS, what is the location of the Acronis Drive on your computer?  This should be the same as the location you have chosen for Mobile Backups shown on the main Configuration Settings page in the GUI.

I believe that this is what you are seeing in your AppData folder, and you are seeing links to the archived data, not the data itself.

See the ATI 2018 User Guide: What is data archiving? where it states the following:

After moving to an archive, the local copies of these files will be deleted. The links to the files are stored in a special location called Acronis Drive. You can access the location as an ordinary folder in File Explorer. Double-clicking a file link will open the file as if it was stored in the local folder. If the file is archived to Acronis Cloud, it will be downloaded back to your computer, first. You can also access and manage it right in Acronis Cloud.

Location...as you stated, folder named Cloud archive located in the same directory as Mobile backups.

AppData\Local\Acronis\Acronis Drive\

They are taking up the same amount of space they were prior to being archived, and don't appear to be links.

Out of curiosity, I moved one of the files from the AppData location. Went to the web-based archive, waiting a significant amount of time, refreshed and downloaded a copy. Seems to be that the file in the AppData location is not just a link. Thereby, defeating the purpose of the archiving functionality.

The User Guide does say: "Double-clicking a file link will open the file as if it was stored in the local folder. If the file is archived to Acronis Cloud, it will be downloaded back to your computer, first."

I have never used the Archive function personally so don't have any direct experience here but have seen that the space used for Mobile backups is also shown as if it is physically on the same local drive when in reality it isn't there.

It may be worth opening a Support Case direct with Acronis if you are still concerned about this issue, so you can get a definitive statement here.
