ATI Exclusion List Ignored
This is a new problem, starting earlier this week - two days ago. My primary & reserve backups, which were always around 30-31 gigs, went way up in size - the primary to about 38 gigs, and the reserve around 42. Those two were always about the same size. I found that the files which are supposed to be excluded are now being included.
Earlier today I did a clean install to see if the problem would go away, but it did not. I uninstalled ATI 2018, used your cleaner, and installed a new copy.
The exclusion list is in the script, and in the two log files I've looked at. Having hiberfil.sys, swapfile.sys, pagefile.sys, and the System Volume Information folder suddenly added to the backup would explain the size difference, but the question for me is "Why now?" I've been using ATI since 2011 and Windows 10 for over a year. Windows Update reports no new updates since June 27th.
Here's the script:

So, I just have to go with it.
Once again, after years of using ATIH, the question is "why now?"
(And why is the reserve backup 6 gigs larger?)

Rob, you can open a Support Case for this issue directly with Acronis Support and work with them to investigate this further to try to get to the bottom of why it is happening.
Another option would be to try doing a Repair Install in case something related to the application has become corrupted? A Repair Install just requires that you reinstall ATI 2018 over the top of what is already installed. Download the full installer from your Acronis account web page.
I would also recommend using the MVP Log File Viewer tool (available via the Community Tools link in my signature) and looking at the Regular view of the log (rather than the Short view) as this gives the most detailed information.

I did a full reinstall-from-scratch the day I posted my original message. I also have the log viewer.

Rob, in your initial post for this topic, you wrote:
Having hiberfil.sys, swapfile.sys, pagefile.sys, and the System Volume Information folder suddenly added to the backup would explain the size difference,
Have you proven that these files are actually being included in your backup image files, i.e. that you can see them if you explore or mount the image file via Windows Explorer?
- Log in to post comments

They most definitely are there. (Note: I disabled hibernation because I don't need it anymore. I had forgotten about it.) Check it out:

Rob, this looks to be very similar to topic: Unknown cause of increase in used disk space which another user has raised - my last suggestion to Ray in that topic was to suggest cloning the task settings and see if the problem persists or not?
If either you or Ray continue to see the same issue, then opening a Support Case is the next logical step to recommend.

System Protection was active on C:. I don't remember turning it on, and I cannot remember a single instance, through three versions of Windows, where it bailed me out of a jam. (Restoring the registry worked every time, however.) I've turned that off as well. It shouldn't have made a difference at any rate.
I've been using TreeSize for years. I love it.
Am a bit under the weather today... I'll get back to this later.

The solution was to replace the default Exception list. I started creating a new task, opened Options and selected the Exclusions tab. I clicked "Initial settings," checked the "Save as default," then OK. I then ran this task and the System Volume Information folder was omitted from the BU.
--------------
He replaced the default exception list with... the default exception list? Did I read that correctly?
I've created new tasks three times this month, and I've always used "save as default". Didn't seem to matter. I created a new one, just for grins.
I'll see what happens tonight.

Rob, the key here is in clicking on the Initial settings button on the Exclusions page which resets the list of exclusions to those set as default by Acronis.
The Save as default option allows you to modify the Exclusions and add your own entries then set these as the default to be used when new tasks are created. If there is a problem with exclusions this can potentially spread the problem to the new tasks created.

I deleted the backup task & created a new one. (Again.) Even though it was brand-spanking new, I hit "Initial Settings" before doing anything. No joy.
One curiosity -
I had turned off System Protection and cleard out all restore points. Then I used a "Take Ownership" registry hack so I could look into the SVI folder.
Slide #1 shows 105 MB in it. That's from a few minutes ago.
Slide #2 is the mounted backup from early this morning... TreeSize shows 5.9 GB in that folder!
As they say in the army, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

Rob, my understanding is that the System Volume Information folders are used for other purposes than just System Protection - this is shown partially in your screen images where FileProtector is a feature of the Acronis Active Protection service.
The core issue here is to ask why are the exclusions being ignored and I can only recommend that you open a Support Case direct with Acronis for them to investigate this issue while ATI 2018 remains a supported product.

"Ticket has been sent." I included a link to this thread for further information.
We'll see what happens. Later.

Update -
Success! We are good to go. (Insert the sounds of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus here.)
After using Team Viewer to initiate a remote session and collecting various pieces of data, Support determined that the problem was caused by errors on the disk!
I ran chkdsk /f /r at next boot and then created a whole new backup task. Following backups no longer contain the offending files and folders.
Disk errors never would have occurred to me. A big thumbs up to software gurus Sujoy and Udyam for their detective work.

Rob, thanks for the update and glad this issue is resolved.
One impact of any disk errors would be that ATI would default to using Sector-by-Sector mode when creating the backup, and in this mode all exclusions are ignored.
I would have expected this to have been shown in the backup log file but this may only be shown when looking at the regular view of the log, not the short view when using the MVP Log Viewer tool.

Thanks dudes for your work/thread!
Same issue here, running chkdsk /f /r fixed my problem of much bigger backups (and incrementals!) bc. exclusion list was ignored as well.

BTW: I would have expected a message box asking me
"Your disk seems to have an error, please run "chkdsk /f /r" on the command line.
Proceeding with backup will result in much bigger backups.
Proceed anyway?

It's ridiculous to expect common customers to work through log files.
