Back-up file size (True Image 2018)

Thread needs solution

Hi

I am using TI2018.  I backup full every 6 days and incremental in between.

I have noticed that the file size of my full backup is less than half of the Used space on my hard drive.

System (C:) Properties : used space 716 GB

TI2018 Estimated Back up size : 716.4 GB

Backup source : Recovery Partition 0,4 GB / System (C:) 716.2 of 1862.6 GB used

TI2018 File size : 292,800,200 KB (c290GB)

Exclusions include Hibfile.sys, pagefil.sys, $Recycle.sys, sapfile.sys, etc - all seem logical to exclude.

I'm using Disks and Partitions, which shows 716.4 of data selected.

Last backup : today    Data to recover: 319.9 GB

It Does not seem to add up....does TI2018 compress it's output data?

Thanks

Pietro

Pietro, ATI does compress the backup image files by an average of around 20%, but the actual compression ratio achieved depends on the file types found on your source drive.

If you have a lot of text documents, Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc, then these can compress at higher levels than files such as JPEG images, Video and MP3 / music files which are already highly compressed by default.

The default exclusions also include System Volume Information which is where Windows stores Restore Point data if this is enabled, and this can account for very large volumes of data (10's to 100's of GB's).

I would recommend using a utility such as TreeSize Free to get a better idea of the size of data on your source drive then compare this with the sizes of the data in your backup image after mounting this to a drive letter, this will show you where some of the differences are.

Thank you for your reply Steve.

I've downloaded TreeSize.and am investigating.

So far I have Windows at 258GB and Program Files (x86) at 231.3GB.  There are few pictures, music and videos on the backup

I'll keep investigating

Pietro

Pietro, thanks for the update, good luck with the ongoing investigations.
