"The backup location was not found on the destination drive. Make sure the correct storage device is connected to the computer. "
I not so occasionally get this message, and the backup fails:
"The backup location was not found on the destination drive. Make sure the correct storage device is connected to the computer. "
Doesn't happen every time, but frequently enough.
The location (where the backup is going) is on an external drive, visible, connected and active, both in Win Explorer, and if I look at it from within Acronis T.I.
If I start the backup again, still fails with the same message. If I "change" location, and select the same (original) location that just failed, it will now run successfully.
This happened in the T.I. 2017 release, so I waited until I upgraded to 2018. But it still happens.
Windows 7,if that matters.
Any one have a suggestion as to what is wrong??
thnx,
.

It might also be that your power plan shuts down inactive USB ports after a period in time. Selecting the location again powers the port again so your backup works.

At a client of mine, I set up ATIH 2017 with 2 backup tasks, everything being the same in the tasks except that each points to a different destination. The different destinations are just different drive letters for each external drive when plugged in. The backups occur ever night.
But only one destination is available at any given time (swapping of external drives). The goal is to swap the external drive every week or two, while the other drive is stored off premises, for safety sake.
I was hoping that ATIH would simply wait for the "missing" drive to reappear and not complain. But instead it sends a failure email complaining that "The backup location was not found on the destination drive. Make sure the correct storage device is connected to the computer."
While the error message is correct, is there a way to fool ATIH 2017 into waiting and not complaining? Yes of course one can ignore the failure emails since there is also a successful email, but then my client might ignore a real failure, and would not be good.
Thanks.

Pierre, this is a little of a regular topic in the forums for users who are swapping destination drives and the answer typically has been that ATI is not designed to be used in this way, at least if changing the drive but using the same drive letter.
There have been various suggestions over time on this issue.

Desktop Reminder message to attach storage disk before scheduled backup.
External USB drive not detected after nightly rotation

Pierre...welcome to these user forums.
When you set up the tasks, did you select "Run when the current destination device is attached" ?

Hi FtrPilot and Steve
Thank you both for your speedy replies. It looks like FtrPilot's reply is the potential solution. I say "potential" because the option "Run when the current destination device is attached" does not exist in ATIH 2017, and I see that the screenshot is from 2018. I will see how my client can upgrade. That should solve the problem.

Pierre, the option to "Run when current device is attached" has been available for quite a number of releases including 2017, but will only be shown when the destination drive is recognised as a removable drive.
See the ATI 2017 User Guide: Scheduling which states:
- If you schedule a backup to a USB flash drive or validation of a backup that is located on a USB flash drive, one more check box appears: Run when the current device is attached. Selecting the check box will let you perform a missed operation when the USB flash drive is attached if it was disconnected at the scheduled time.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
Thank you Steve. The issue is arising on a client's machine and I was testing it on a machine of mine using a network target, not a USB drive, so I didn't see the option, so I assumed it wasn't available in 2017 since the screenshot showed 2018.
I then remotely connected to the client's machine and checked the box. I was only able to do it for the task for which the drive is connected. It didn't show for the other one, which is not currently connected (not surprised by that). Tomorrow I need to go back to my client and bring her second disk back (brought it home to do a "chkdsk /r" on a 6TB disk, took 13h directly connected), swap, and check the box for the other task.
Problem solved.
Thanks again to FtrPilot for pointing out this hidden gem, and to Steve for pointing out it's available in 2017.

Pierre, glad to have helped along with FtrPilot.
