BitLocker active on Windows 10 1909 True Image tell no backup possible

Thread solved

Hello

I'm fighting with BitLocker and True Image to run a backup to WD Element USB Drive.

The Backup I start (every on!!!), ends with BitLocker secured Drive is not possible to backup.

I searched and found that BitLocker can be suspended and then it can do the backup...but this is not working even this is suspend activity is done. Are there any Hint's or Tip's how I can solve the BitLocker issue, without remove BitLocker or Suspend of the process?

Thanks a lot for any assistance

Urs

Urs, welcome to these public User Forums.

Please can you clarify exactly what you are attempting to do here and where BitLocker is applied to?  Is this the Source data that is protected by BitLocker or is it the Destination drive that has BitLocker?

See KB 56619: Acronis True Image: compatibility with BitLocker for more information.

Hello Steve

Thank's for your response.

Is this the Source data that is protected by BitLocker or is it the Destination drive that has BitLocker?

The source data disk is BitLocker activated.

I tried to suspend the BitLocker accoring your hint: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/38508-suspend-resume-bitlocker-protection-drive-windows-10-a.html

Then I started the True Image Backup to do an backup. This backup is failing because the drive (C: Boot Drive) is BitLocker protected. It fails to backup.

Hello Steve

the Source Disk is BitLocker enabled.
I tried to run with SUSPENDED BitLocker a Backup to the attached USB Drive ...it fails with the message BitLocker drive are to able to backup. I tried with the Volume C only ...all attemp are failing.
Thanks for your assistance

Urs, next question here, how are you doing the backup for this encrypted drive?

If you are using ATI from within Windows 10 and it can see the Source drive, then that drive is unlocked and there should be no issue with creating a backup of the data.

If you are using the ATI Rescue Media to boot your computer, then the media has no support for BitLocker by default, so you would need to create alternative WinPE based rescue media with BitLocker support injected and then unlock the encrypted drive before attempting to perform the backup.

The MVP Custom PE Builder script can create WinPE rescue media including BitLocker support but you would still need to manually unlock the drive when in that PE environment.

Hello Steve

thanks for your response.

If you are using ATI from within Windows 10 and it can see the Source drive, then that drive is unlocked and there should be no issue with creating a backup of the data.

I can see the drive to be backuped.
I've done now an other selection, FILES to Backup only the files (entire Disk) ...and with this selection, it does the backup.

Then I was on the wrong path, as I selected the Volume (Partition) to do backup.

I guess I have now the solution ...I want and it works

Steve I have to thank you for your assistance

best regards

Urs, please understand that a Files & Folders backup image cannot be used to recover your Windows OS - it needs to be a Disks & Partitions backup image to do that type of recovery.

Hello Steve

The first Backup I've done was in the following sequence

  1. Removed the BitLocker
  2. ATI Disk/Image Backup (I guess it's sector by sector backup?)
  3. Reinstalled the BitLocker again
  4. ATI File and Folder Backup

At step 4 I've run into the problem ...

But from my side I would like to do a incrementell Backup all time, without any BitLocker remove and re-install
...it should be possible to do the backup with ATI and just suspended BitLocker

Is this possible?

Thanks a lot for assistance
Urs

Urs, as per KB 56619: Acronis True Image: compatibility with BitLocker if your C: Source drive is 'encrypted and unlocked' then you can backup that drive using the Windows ATI GUI application including making incremental / scheduled backups.  This has been the same for all recent versions of ATI.

You should not need to remove or suspend BitLocker and it is normally unlocked when you are at the Windows desktop.

If you are still seeing an issue when using the ATI GUI, then please post the ti_demon backup log as a file attachment so that I can see what actual messages are being reported in the log?

Please download the MVP Log Viewer tool (link in my signature below) and use this to review the log file for your backup operation. This should provide more information on why you are seeing any notification messages?
