Boot from CD, cannot see USB-connected external drive

Thread needs solution

Hi there,

I'm unable to see the external USB drive that will be the destination for the image I hope to create via booting from the CD (DVD?).  I can get to the True Image interface and navigate nimbly through all the menus but the USB drive is not listed.  I can see the USB drive when I go into the BIOS settings.  I can't find any "refresh devices" trigger that might help the app re-read connected drives.  The drive is connected when I boot, I just can't see it to direct the software to write the image to it.

TIA

How is your USB connected to the computer?  Is this directly or via a hub or other intermediate device?
What type of USB device is this?  Is this USB 2.0 or is it a newer USB 3.0 device?

Which version of the Acronis Rescue Media are you using here?
Is it the Linux version, or have you created the WindowsPE version?

As Steve says it is difficult to know what is the cause of the problem. It is possible that the recovery media does not have a driver for the USB controller. What type of USB device are you using? And which recovery media are you using? There have been reports in the past of problems with external USB devices housing multiple HDD that was, if memory servers me correctly, due to the recovery media not having the device driver for the USB hub in the external multi-drive device.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to this.  It’s an aftermarket USB 3 enclosure for (I believe) a Seagate 1TB Sata drive.

I realize this doesn’t help w the drivers - I’ll get more defined vender/version info when I can access the resources again.

I was using the media (CD) that came w Acronis TI 2018.

I’ve been able to access this external drive w and older version of Acronis booted from a flash drive (I believe it was 2014) so I was a little surprised when it didn’t show up.  Is there a means by which, for licensed users, it’s possible to download and install on a flash drive (presumably including this USB 3 interface driver) Acronis TI 2018?  Perhaps if I use that method, I’ll get better results.

The supplied boot media for all versions of ATI is based on a Linux kernel which may not have drivers for newer USB 3.x devices.

Acronis is not able to provide a download of the alternative Windows PE rescue media because of Microsoft licensing rules, but you can create this yourself very easily directly on your USB stick, and with ATI 2018 & later, the Simple media builder method will default to trying to create WinPE media by using files found in your Windows Recovery Environment.

Thanks!  Will give it a try and report back here.

Hi. Same here, I'm using True Image 2021 on a Windows 7 Prof 64bit SP1 PC.

My backup is stored on a WD10EAVS external USB device.

I created a recovery CD > Simple/DVD drive, but when it boots, the only drives I see to browse for backup are the internal SATA HDD. None of my external USB devices are shown (not even lit up). I've had these external drives for years with no problems. TI 2021 sees the drives for backup but not for recovery.

Just created an account which wasn't activated when I created the recovery CD. True Image 2021 is on trial for another 30 days.

Five years since original post and still no solution. What is the point of backup software if it can't detect recovery devices? Thinking of trying other software. I need peace of mind.

Thanks.

Just from your description above it sounds as if your USB controller (for the ports) or your WD USB HDD require additional device drivers in order to be recognised.

I would suggest trying the Linux based rescue media to test to see if that will see the USB drive and if not, then you would need to identify the drivers needed and include these in the rescue media.
