Booting from External DVD Drive
I don't install ATI on any of my systems; I always use a bootable DVD. I'd like to do the same for my daughter's laptop (I purchased 3 licences), but her laptop has no DVD drive, so I'm thinking of purchasing and external, USB DVD drive. Has anyone had any success booting ATI from an external DVD drive and if so, which make ?
Thanks,
PeterK

I agree with Steve, go USB flash drive, a much better choice.

Steve, Enchantech,
Thanks for the advice. Can I create the rescue media without Installing Acronis TI ?

Pete, you can download a CD .ISO image file from your Acronis account but would then need to use a third-party tool such as Rufus or ISOtoUSB to write the ISO contents to a USB drive and make this bootable. The ISO image will be a Linux version of the Rescue Media. The WinPE version of the media can only be created from within Windows using the Acronis Rescue Media Builder tool (or using the MVP Custom ATIPE Builder script).

I would advise that if you do create boot media outside of the True Image application that you use Rufus to do so and follow the steps below so that the media will have boot capability in both Legacy and UEFI modes for best compatibility
To create a bootable USB that supports both Legacy and UEFI Boot options proceed as follows.
- Open Rufus utility.
- Select the USB drive onto which you want to create the live bootable media.
- In order to support both UEFI and Legacy boot select the first option i.e MBR Partition scheme for BIOS and UEFI under partition scheme and target system type.
- Select file system as FAT32 and Default Cluster size.
- Tick the box with Create a bootable disk using and browse for the ISO file.
- Click START and wait for it to complete.

Thanks again to Steve and Enchantech for those clear and detailed instructions. Very much appreciated.

Pete,
After posting to your thread here I found that Rufus has an issue with creating boot media in that it is unable to create such media to boot from an Legacy MBR bios machine. An inherent limitation of the app. If that applies to you, you might want to have a look at the thread covering the subject. HERE

Steve,Enchantech,
I installed and ran Rufus as instructed and was able to create a USB boot disk from the ATI iso. I then successfully backed up one of the partitions on my desktop system. OK, that should have worked anyway, but it was good to see the boot drive verified. I then used the usb drive to boot ATI on my daughter's Acer Aspire laptop. I hit an issue that I should probably have anticipated - the touchpad didn't respond - so I assume no drivers. I guess I could try a usb mouse, but this dinky little laptop is a bit light on ports, so I'll swat up on keyboard usage in ATI (it was a bit embarrassing trying to guess how to exit). So no backup as yet, but definite progress.
Cheers,

Pete, might be worth investing in a small USB hub to use with the Acer Aspire where you could plug in an external mouse along with an external backup drive etc. These are not expensive even for a powered model.
Found AmazonBasics 7-Port USB 2.0 Hub with UK Plug for only £14.99 on the UK Amazon store, so must be equivalent models available in other countries too.
