Bootmgr missing after restore

Thread needs solution

I am using TI 2018. I created a full disk image of my SSD. When I tried to restore this image, being careful to select all the partitions as well as drive signature, the computer would not boot with the message 'Bootmgr missing'. I had another SSD & tried restoring onto this one & the restore worked but I would like to understand why I got Bootmgr missing error.

Martin, difficult to say why one of your restore operations worked fine when the other didn't?

Did you choose exactly the same options each time?

Were both SSD's in the same starting state? i.e. both raw format / empty drives, or both with a single NTFS volume etc?

What did the Restore logs show, assuming you saved these if using the Rescue Media to boot, or else check them via the MVP Log Viewer if restores done from the Windows ATI application.

When doing a full disk restore, you should ideally only select the top Disk box, not individual partitions.  See the attached PDF document for an example from ATIH 2017 (still relevant for other versions when using the Rescue Media).

Thanks for your reply. I did not opt to save any log files when using the Rescue Media.

I am curious to know what caused the initial issue which required TI to be used to restore my system. Don't know if anyone can help.

System
Motherboard - Gigabyte Z77-D3H
CPU -  i5 3570K
Crucial_CT500MX2 SCSI Disk Device (SSD) with windows 10 & programs. (C)
2TB Western Digital WDC WD20EFRX-68AX9N0 SCSI Disk Device (SATA) for backup. (D)

I unplugged the WD Hard drive and when I attempted to boot I got 'bootmgr missing'. I reconnected the WD drive but still coultn't boot the PC.  I run start up repair and this couldn't fix the issue. I then restored the ATI image which initially didn't work (see original post) but worked on a different SSD. I have never had this happen before. Why would disconnecting the D drive cause the PC not to boot?

Thanks for any help in understanding what happened.

Martin, the only reason I am aware of why disconnecting the D drive would cause the PC not to boot would be if there was a dependency between the drives, i.e. if the Boot files or BCD store was on that drive, but if that was the case, then the same should happen for the second SSD too?

Hi @ Martin Greshoff  ,

It depends. Did you also back up Hidden Partitions on the SSD, when you created the Backup?

In what order, did you do the Restore?
