Can ATI replace all of WHS' backup and bare metal restore functionality?
For many years I have run WHS at home, first v1 and I later upgraded to WHS2011. This machine acted as a media server running SageTV, file server and it also backed up all of my Windows clients - I have as many as ten Windows machines on my LAN.
I have now migrated to using unRAID as my file server and dockers to run SageTV, Plex, etc, but I need something to replace the backup and restore, including bare metal restore, capabilities of WHS.
- Can ATS do automated nightly system images, including incremental backups without requiring a system reboot?
- Can ATS do WOL to wake up PCs that are sleeping?
- Can I use a network location on my unRAID server, which is visible on my Windows machines as a network shared drive, as my backup destination.
- Can I do a restore over the network using a network share as the source of the backup -ie. restore from \\server1\backups\kitchenpc\28aug2017.
- Does the above make sense or does it make sense to copy the image file to a 128GB USB key (assuming the image is less than this size), or a portable hard drive, and do the backup from there? Or is there a better way to do quick bare metal restores?
- Can it manage the number of backups to keep in a logical way (ie. keep every day for the last week, once a week or once a month for older backups?)
- Is it economical to do this for multiple machines on my LAN ie. is the $50 fee per client PC or is it for all PCs on my LAN.
- Is the mobile backup of iOS or Android devices part of this product or is that a separate product?
- (Nice to have) Can it also backup computers running Linux, including Rasp Pis?
Thanks for all the help!

wayner, welcome to these User Forums.
Sorry but I have no knowledge of Windows Home Server or its capabilities.
Acronis True Image is a Home user product which is not intended for use in a server environment - there are other Acronis business products which are designed for such server spaces.
Yes, ATIH can do automated backups by schedule without requiring a system reboot, and can store those backups on local, external and network resources, NAS, FTP server or Cloud storage.
Restores / recovery can be done from a network resource but this depends on what is being restored, so if you are wanting to restore your OS, no this won't work without using the bootable Acronis Rescue Media - as would be required in a bare-metal recovery situation.
I would recommend taking a read through the ATIH 2018 User Guide for answers to many of your other questions, or to open a PreSales support case direct with Acronis for information on prices, license scales etc.
