Can I copy the 2018 rescue boot Files to a external hard drive to make it boot into Acronis

Thread solved

Hi folks,

I now use Acronis true image 2010 within windows 7 (dual boot computer with windows 10 as well) and it works well creating backups, though the only problem is that I have an SSD and the 2010 boot cd can't see the SSD.

So I use the 2018 boot cd which can see an SSD, I have tried Acronis Home 2018 software within windows itself, but there is no way I can express how I really hate that program, totally unreliable and incomprehensible software that I was glad to see shot of, rant over!

The only redeeming feature is the 2018 rescue boot cd that I created that does seem to work.

Now my questions are, Though I have a cd boot disk for 2018, is it possible for me to just copy those files in it to an external hard drive (that does have other data on it) or an USB drive, would like to be able to do both actually, just in case the cd drive in my computer fails, and I have no other means of restoring the images, I would like to be able to do this without having to install ATI 2018 again.

Many thanks for your kind help.

Joe, which type of recue media do you have for ATI 2018?

For the ATI 2018 & later version rescue media, there are 3 different versions available:
Simple:  created based on your Windows Recovery Environment for WinPE media.
Advanced: created based on Windows ADK (or AIK for earlier OS versions) - WinPE media.
Advanced: created based on a small Linux distro OS (BusyBox) or created from the .ISO CD image download from your Acronis Account page.

If you have WinPE rescue media then it is possible to put this on an external HDD drive in a small 2GB FAT32 partition required for the purpose.

If you have the Linux based rescue media, then not possible as far as I understand.

Steve, very sorry for the late follow up to your reply. to be honest I am not sure as to what kind I created, maybe there is a way to look at the files on the DVD and find out that way.

Ok leaving the external hard drive aside, do the same rules apply if I was to put the files on an USB stick?

I could always boot from that, but if the same rules apply for the USB stick, I take it I would have to reinstall ATI 2018 to enable me to make one?

Thanks yet again Steve, hope all is well with you.

Joe,  the simplest method of getting your external drive to be bootable using the rescue media is as follows:

  1. Download a copy of the free MiniTool Partition Wizard software and use this to create a 2GB FAT32 partition at the start of the external HDD drive.  You do this by using the 'Move/Resize' option in PW after selecting the external HDD drive, then right-click on that drive (partition) to reveal the menu.  Drag the left end of the partition to the right to create a 2GB unallocated space.
Once you have the unallocated space, select it then right-click and select the Create option to create a FAT32 partition, plus allocate a Windows drive letter to the same.
  2. Use the ATI 2018 Rescue Media Builder tool in Windows to create new rescue media and select the new FAT32 2GB partition drive letter for the target for the media.
You would need to have ATI 2018 installed to do this step.

On ATI 2019 & later versions, there is a new option to create an Acronis Survival Kit which does the same as the above from within the ATI GUI.
