CLONE HDD-2-SSD vs RESTORE HDD BACKUP in SSD

Thread needs solution

CLONE HDD-2-SSD vs RESTORE HDD BACKUP in SSD

I have a 1TB HDD with two partitions C:/ and T:/

Which is the best or the easiest way to migrate to SSD 1TB

Clone disk 0 [C:/ + T:/] to SSD

or

Backup disk 0 [HDD] and restore in SSD

???

Lse, either method should work and give the same results, but I recommend that you always make a full disk & partitions backup regardless of the method being chosen, this is your safeguard against any mistakes, errors or unforseen circumstances arising while doing this type of migration, i.e. power surge or spike etc.

Some general advice around this migration action.

Please run the command msinfo32 from within Windows to determine which BIOS mode is used by Windows to boot the OS.  This should show either UEFI for more recent computers, or else show Legacy for older computers.

If you have a UEFI BIOS mode system, then your Boot Priority in the BIOS settings needs to be set to the Windows Boot Manager and your restore of your disk backup or clone using the Acronis Rescue Media needs to be done when booting the media in the same UEFI BIOS mode.

If you have a Legacy BIOS mode system, then your Boot Priority in the BIOS settings should be set to the physical disk drive, and again, the restore or clone should be done by booting the Rescue Media in Legacy mode.

Note: when making a backup of your HDD drive, it is very important that you include any Hidden / System partitions required by Windows to boot correctly.  This can include an EFI system partition for UEFI systems, and a System Reserved partition for Legacy systems - these partitions hold information needed to boot into Windows.

when use the restore backup method to restore-hdd-backup to ssd empty disc... THE formating of ssd to appropriate happen auto? Also to restore to ssd where to boot to do it since i have to disconnect hdd bootable? ?I think in backup included Acronis copy 2018 TI... also can boot from acronis ti 2018 in dvd media...?

in case power off - i have ups - exist possibility damage backup in external usb 3 disk tjhat holds backup, or also damage ssd ?

Lse, you need to create the Acronis bootable Rescue media prior to starting this process - this can be created on CD/DVD or on a USB stick.

See KB 60820: Acronis True Image 2018: how to create bootable media - for detailed instructions.

See also KB 59877: Acronis True Image 2017: how to distinguish between UEFI and Legacy BIOS boot modes of Acronis Bootable Media

Finally see forum topic: [How to] recover an entire disk backup - which covers the restore process.

if in the backup settings

backup in usb 3.0 hdd

i chose include acronis TI 2018

this means I can boot from this backup usb 3 hdd itself withOut DVD or USB stick boot media?

Lse, sorry but no, you will still need the bootable DVD or USB stick Rescue Media.

See the ATI 2018 User Guide information for Removable Media settings where it says:

When backing up to removable media, you can make this media bootable by writing additional components to it. Thus, you will not need a separate bootable disk.

Acronis True Image 2018 does not support creating bootable media if a flash drive is formatted in NTFS or exFAT. The drive must have a FAT16 or FAT32 file system.

I think in my PC was Win 7 after Win 8 after Win 10 Pro - I forgot do a win 7 BIOS update [cannot do now in win 10] is any way during migration procedure do thuis?

Also for this below apply this:   // ???

If you have a UEFI BIOS mode system, then your Boot Priority in the BIOS settings needs to be set to the Windows Boot Manager and your restore of your disk backup or clone using the Acronis Rescue Media needs to be done when booting the media in the same UEFI BIOS mode.

Lse, your msinfo32 output clearly shows BIOS Mode    UEFI  - so as advised above, you need to use the same UEFI mode when booting from the Acronis Rescue Media.

This would be shown during your initial boot in a way similar to the images below:

bootmenu.pngbootmenu.jpg

The key point is to select the option that shows UEFI for the device where you Rescue Media will boot from. So in the images above, the choice would be to select the UEFI: SanDisk entries, so that the rescue media is booted in the correct UEFI mode.

If I make a boot-able DVD and my PC boot from it automatically - this means booted in UEFI mode?

If No, Not mean that

Is PC specific the key in keyboard to press on boot to choose the media and boot mode to boot on?

If I make a boot-able DVD and my PC boot from it automatically - this means booted in UEFI mode?

Sorry but not known as will depend on your BIOS settings and whether you allow Legacy/CSM boot or not?  If your BIOS is configured for UEFI only then the DVD boot should be UEFI.

Is PC specific the key in keyboard to press on boot to choose the media and boot mode to boot on?

Yes, the boot menu key can be different for different makes of PC.  Dell uses F12 but other makes use different keys such as ESC, DEL, F2 etc.  You will need to check the PC support site for your computer make.

If you have a UEFI BIOS mode system, then your Boot Priority in the BIOS settings needs to be set to the Windows Boot Manager and your restore of your disk backup or clone using the Acronis Rescue Media needs to be done when booting the media in the same UEFI BIOS mode.

Acronis Rescue Media is the same as download

Acronis Rescue Media is the same as download

AcronisTrueImage2018_12510.iso     //   662 MB

This is one option for the Acronis Rescue Media, you can also create this directly from the ATI 2018 main GUI application by using the Acronis Rescue Media Builder tool.

See KB 60820: Acronis True Image 2018: how to create bootable media

Tomorrow my SSD  is to come...

I will backup HDD with Acronis ALL DISK 0

INSERT CD-R

turn off PC, I will disconnect POWER + disconnect HDD / connect SSD

CD-R boot up in UEFI for Acronis Bootable media

Do you know any Acronis help/KB topic with screen shots instead of another Post in forums... ?

Is hard to read that post you refer...

Lse, did you look at the PDF document linked in the forum topic I referenced?  This has lots of screen shots of the process to do a disk recovery?

See KB 59877: Acronis True Image: how to distinguish between UEFI and Legacy BIOS boot modes of Acronis Bootable Media - for more screen images.

I am ready do a last backup and restore tib backup to SSD...

how understand the backup includes ALL partitions of Disc 0 including boot relative partitions? I have to : when do last backup see what actually i get backup? must be ALL partitions disk 0 ...that's ok???

When the TIB backup has 6 or 7 incremental backup from first BACKUP,... matters ANYTHING... ? OR IS BETTER DO A NEW FULL BACKUP AND RESTORE THIS...TO NEW SSD???

Also to BOOT to UEFI DVD ACRONIS BOOTABLE MEDIA.... If boot default is any way recognize booted in uefi/dvd or must FIND the keystroke to choose boot from THIS IS THE ONLY WAY????

=====

ALSO in Acronis TI 2018 i have THE option clone HDD->SSD from inside Windows without boot from media correct? This way success message appears on finished???

=====

IS THIS FEASIBLE

RATHER USE BOOTABLE MEDIA, USE ACRONIS FROM HDD TO RESTORE BACKUP IN SSD

RATHER DISCONNECT [ACRONIS TI 2018] HDD CONNECT SSD

CONNECT SSD WITH USB 3 ADAPTER AND RESTORE BACKUP IN WIN 1O ENVIRONMENT

IS THIS OK??

AFTER INTERCHANGE HDD WITH SSD... IS THIS AN OPTION ???

WHAT way you suggest the most ?

Also when my Windows 10 in HDD runs OK I have option restore a backup - depending what i wanted - either in HDD of Windows itself (feasible?) or in OTHER SSD CONNECTED USB 3 ADAPTER  with intention to replace HDD with SSD ... ALL FROM INSIDE WIN 10... (and this feasible?) ?

RECOMMENDED IS A VIRUS SCAN PRIOR EACH BACKUP?

Lse, the first recommendation is to always have a good, full backup of your Windows 10 HDD which is stored on a separate backup drive.  That is your safety net in case of any problems!

If you have your new SSD drive and can connect this directly to your computer using a USB 3.x adapter, then you can use the ATI 2018 Active Clone feature to clone your HDD drive contents to your new SSD drive.

When using Active Clone, it works best when there is no OS data already on the target drive, i.e. your new SSD is empty.

Very Important!  Do NOT attempt to boot into Windows 10 after doing the Clone to the SSD with both the SSD and HDD drives connected!  Cloning includes the drive signature which means both drives will report as having the same, identical drive signature, which can confuse Windows and potentially cause corruption.

After the Clone is completed successfully, you should shutdown the computer fully (press the Shift key when clicking on Shutdown), then remove the HDD and replace it by the new SSD drive.

Likewise ATI 2018 Active Clone  in Windows 10

Exist/can RESTORE HDD BACKUP(from USB 3 ext HDD) to SSD (CONNECTED USB 3 adapter) by booting in Windows 10 environment HDD (that soon replaced).. ? how proceed ?

Again I have to SHUTDOWN PC to disconnect SSD and DISCONNECT POWER and replace HDD with SSD... ?

In other words recover tib backup in TI 2018 WITHOUT bootable media in windows ... I guest that is safer FROM CLONING DIRECTLY, isn't it?

matter if 7 incremental backup exist in TIB backup???

Lse, using Active Clone should be safe provided you have the safeguard of having a good backup in place.

Doing a Recovery in Windows can also work but then requires you to connect both the new SSD and the external backup drive to your computer at the same time.

The 100% safest option is to make the backup, remove the HDD and replace with the SSD, then Recover the backup to the SSD using the ATI Rescue Media.  It is safest because the HDD is away from any harm being disconnected from the computer.

If you are recovering from an Incremental Backup version chain, then you should be selecting the most recent Increment .tib file in the chain, then ATI will automatically recover the whole chain of files involved.

I prefer RECOVERY IN WINDOWS from TIB last backup to SSD

I do Not want to get out HDD - I just WANT connect SSD AFTER RECOVERY and if boots then interchange ... HDD with SSD...

YOU SAY "

You cannot boot from the SSD when it is connected externally by USB 3.x - this is not allowed by Microsoft for Windows to boot, and you should not try to start Windows with 2 drives that have the same disk signature, i.e. your HDD and SSD after cloning or restore.

I mean connect SATA the SSD without take out HDD ... the pc case should be open --- when all ok and boots the interchange them... unscrew ...etc

Yes I know cannot boot from EXT SSD/HDD

There is no 'DANGER' other than if errors or mistakes are made when choosing where to recover the backup to, or a power failure etc.  Your full backup is protection against these issues.

If your intent is to test booting from the SSD by disconnecting the cables to the HDD and connecting the cables to the SSD instead, then there is no risk to the HDD by doing this.

On a point of forum etiquette, there is no need to 'SHOUT!!' in your forum posts!

How do RECOVERY IN WINDOWS from TIB last backup to SSD ??? - boot from HDD windows 10

(provide KB/help url with screenshots)

After finished I just shot down - disconnect electricity from PC.... discoonect HDD ---> connect SSD [SATA CONNECT the SSD AFTER did RECOVERY to it] --- connect electricity... power on... and if boots then and only then interchange ... HDD with SSD...

I followed link to reach this ^^^

But refers to boot from rescue bootable media

I do Not want this but

The most easiest I prefer by connect usb 3 ssd

Restore disk 0 to ssd from windows boot normally in hdd win 10 acronis ti2018

After shut down disconnect ssd usb and disconnect hdd sata

Connect sata ssd with open pc case

If boots then interchange hdd with ssd close pc case and all ok

Again restore in windows not use any media to boot from

Please provide this in guide...?

Lse, sorry but I am not in a position to perform this type of restore in order to write up the process and capture screen images.

See KB 59870: Acronis True Image 2017: how to restore the system to the original disk from within running Windows which covers essentially the same process, but where if you select your external USB attached new SSD, should not need to do a computer restart at step 11 onwards, as you will not be restoring to your original source internal HDD drive.

So in this link

Choose [usb connected] SSD - instead of HDD Disk 0...

after press restore - and completed shutdown and

disconnect power from PC

connect SATA the SSD - open kept PC case

Boot system with SSD - Boot Partition Should auto (C:/ - exist and T:/ letter on Disk 0)  detected during boot

If all OK

shutdown

disconnect power

interchange HDD with SSD - use HDD-to-SSD adapter if No SSD slot

that's true & correct?

In RECOVER Tab - I have Not option recover in SSD (USB connected) but Only recover in Disk 0 [T:/ C:/] - I make backup from... well?

Backup-ed C:/ T:/ - all disk 0 ... but Not see EFI partition... because Not exist ... well?

If the SSD is not detected by ATI then you should use the Add new disk tool provided by ATI which will prepare the drive for use by ATI.

disk initialization method for ssd???

MBR or GPT ????

This SSD It will replace Disk 0 [c:/ T:/]

Leonidas, you do not need to initialise the new SSD as this will be done automatically by ATI during the restore of your source drive backup image.  The SSD will be made the same as your source drive, i.e. both drives will be either MBR or GPT.

Yes but add disk utilit

ask for

MBR or

GPT...

what to do? otherwise Not see the SSD

Open Windows Disk Management, then right-click on your disk drive and select Properties, then look at the Volumes tab which will show what type of partition scheme is used.

Leonidas, this is a case where you need to use the MVP Log Viewer tool (link in my signature) and post the log messages for the Recovery operation, which should say which partition is causing this format resize issue?

Soon do

Can you send direct link because signature confusing

If backup disk 0 all partitions c: T: efi... etc

Can then with Acronis ti2018 restore in SSD all partitions except T:/. .. how? I have to unselect t:/...?

MVP Log Viewer tool

how find this in my Acronis TI 2018 ... ?

I do Not want install additional tools... just tell where is this in my already installed software???

MVP Log Viewer is available from the Acronis Community Tools page.
It is a standalone program that does not need to be installed.  There is no log viewer provided within the ATI 2018 application on Windows.

something error

I shut down PC yesterday - i restored to SSD

but now on startup

I think says

UEFI boot loader

press F11 for Acronis

if press F11 enter acronis bootable media

How exit to windows 10 Pro???

otherwise enter a screen DHCP...\ progress in CLI

but Now can not

 boot in windows 10 well???

I disconnected SSD , ext HDD and dvd ejected bootable... yesterday

how boot in windows like before fail recovering to ssd???

Leonidas, if you have reconnected your original working HDD drive and ejected / disconnected any other boot media, external drives etc, then you may need to go into the BIOS settings and ensure that you have got 'Windows boot manager' selected as your Boot priority device.
