Delete backup scheme from Acronis True Image 2018

Thread solved

I installed Acronis 2018 on my new Windows 10 desktop computer and by mistake set up the first backup to my C drive. When I realized my error, I did another backup to an external hard drive.  So, at that point I had 2 full backups: 1 to C drive and the other to External drive.

I set the options for the external drive to daily schedule and a custom scheme of incremental then a full version after every 5 incremental versions.  This is working fine.

I do not wanted any back ups to the C drive, but I can't stop Acronis from continuing to create a backup to C drive.  On separate days I tried removing, deleting, and do not schedule from the Acronis system.  I also tried deleted the path in my C drive.  It appears to be corrected in Acronis because after I delete the backup it does not appear in the list of backups. But each night (when the backup was scheduled) the backup scheme is recreated and a new backup is made on the C drive.

How do I completely remove this backup to the C drive so it will not be recreated by Acronis? It is causing me to have insufficient space on C drive.

Deana, welcome to these public User Forums.

Normally if you use the Delete option for the unwanted task in the main ATI 2018 GUI and then select to 'Delete everything' this should remove the task, the schedule and the files created by it, so it seems strange that you say this isn't working?

Please try deleting the task again using the Delete > Delete everything option.

Next, in Explorer, go to C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts and see how many .tib.tis files are present in that folder?

Open each .tib.tis file in Notepad and look at the information shown near the top of the file for the name of the unwanted backup task.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<batch>
    <version>1.0</version>
    <uuid>837EF334-6CBE-4702-83D0-146ED98EBB4C</uuid>
    <display>Win 10 SSD</display>
    <priority>low</priority>

The task name is shown inside the <display> brackets, i.e. Win 10 SSD as above from one of my tasks.

If you find a tib.tis file with your unwanted task, then you should delete it.

Note: You will need to turn off Acronis Active Protection before being able to delete the .tib.tis file as AAP will prevent you otherwise!  This is done from the ATI GUI using a switch on the AAP page.

Hopefully doing the above will resolve this issue for you.

Thank you for such a thorough explanation.  I would never have found the files without your details. I still have some questions.

I found the tib files your referred to. I am totally unfamiliar with this type of file.  There are 2 of them.  Both refer to the computer name in the display section.

I already have set up a daily backup to an external hard drive on E with a full backup after 5 incremental backups and this seems to be working perfectly.

I also did an initial backup to a different external hard drive on F to keep permanently in case I need it.  My plan is to add a new backup to create and keep semi-permanently one or two times a year just in case my computer and/or external drive fails.The backup to F can only be done when I plug the external drive into the computer.

My questions:

1. Why don't I see a tib file for these 2 backups?

2. Do I entirely delete both of the tib files?  If so, will I still have the other 2 backup schemes I want to keep?

I noticed that there are a number of differences between the 2 tib files. For your reference, here is a copy of the section you refer to along with a few more lines where you will see some differences.  I am including this in case you need it to be able to respond to my questions.

tib file 1:   58230FB6-B1EA-4A1E-944F-D809F1A6D31E.tib

Deana, the .tib.tis files are XML script files that ATI uses for the tasks shown in the main ATI GUI, so if you have two backup tasks shown in the GUI with the names shown in these two script files, you should leave them alone.

The real issue here is that you have two different backup tasks but which have the same task name of WINDOWS-K79G56A - this is going to cause problems because it can lead to confusion as information about these tasks is also stored in an internal SQL database using the name.

Personally, I would recommend making a clean start with your backup tasks by creating two new tasks using unique names of your own choice, making these as descriptive as possible, then once those tasks have been run, delete the original tasks from the GUI using the Delete option and to 'Delete everything' (ensuring that your backup drive is available when doing this).

Acronis gives a default name to all new backup tasks but this can be changed to a more meaningful name immediately or else before running the task by using the Rename option from the task menu (click on the caret 'v' to the right of the name to see the menu options).

Note: do not delete the .tib.tis script files unless there is no matching task shown in the main GUI for the file being deleted.

Thank you so much for all of your help.  I had no knowledge about the tib files and could never have solved this without your help. I followed your suggestions:  deleted the backup scheme to C which was recreated every night by ATI, deleted the tib file that referred to the C drive, and changed the names of the other backup schemes.  Last night the backup to my external hard drive ran an incremental as usual and for the first time I didn't get a full backup to the C drive. My problem is solved.  Thank you again.
