deleting Differential files In True Image 2018

Thread needs solution

My backup scheme is custom where I have 1 full backup then do a Diff every day.  After some time I would like to delete Diff files such that I only have 1 Diff per month for anything older than 3 months.  This means deleting about 30 or so Diff files when they become 3 months old, leaving only 1 Diff file for that month.

I have read that I can't just delete the files with windows explorer because it messes up the internal DB in True Image. I also read somewhere that the only way to do this deletion and keep the DB consistent is to boot from rescue disk and do it from there, but I can't seem to find a way to delete the files in the recovery boot program.  I have also read that I can clone my backup scheme then delete the Diff's created with the old backup scheme, then continue with backups using the new (ie cloned) backup scheme.  If I do this do I need to do another full backup then subsequent Diff's or are the original backups (full and diff) from the original scheme still available for restore?

Sorry, but the simple act of deleting a Diff file seems to be much more complicated than it should be, BUT I would like to do it correctly, so any help is appreciated.

Ron, there is no simple method of removing individual differential backup files from a version chain provided by ATI other than by using automatic cleanup to remove whole version chains (full plus all differential or incremental files).

The recommendation to delete any backup files by booting from the Acronis Rescue Media is at best misleading and at worst a waste of time and effort, as doing this will not reconcile the Acronis Database that stores information on all backup files created for a task.

To do as you have stated, this will have to be a manual action and be performed using Windows / File Explorer then followed up by running a Validation of your backup task to deal with the errors the file deletion will create & to reconcile the database information after taking the Ignore option for the pop-up error messages produced by validation.

An additional complication is that with ATI 2018 and later, you will need to suspend AAP if you have it active since this will prevent you from deleting .tib files while active.

I would suggest looking at your differential file sizes as in my experience there is a point where the size of a differential rapidly approaches the size of a full backup, which is when you should consider calling a limit to the number of differentials and starting a new version chain.
