Drive assignment using Rescue Media from latest build -- Linus vs WinRE vs prior build

Thread needs solution

I have found that when I do a full C: drive backup using the latest Linux Rescue Media, the C: drive in the .tib is the actual C: drive. I see four drive partitions in the .tib -- C:, Recovery, FAT32(1-2), and NTFS(1-5).

But when I use the latest WinRE Rescue Media, this is not the case. Instead the C: drive shows up as D: and the Boot partition shows up as G:, same as FAT32(1-2). Recovery and NTFS(1-5) appear the same.

I looked at the backup I created in early September using the WinRE Rescue Media created under the prior build and in this case the C: drive shows correctly as C: in the .tib. The others are labeled as in the current WinRE.

Would there be any issue in trying to recover with the wrong drive letter for the main drive? Why has it changed in the latest version? Is this a bug? Does it matter? Meanwhile, I'll stick to using the Linux version.

Bruno...I believe that it does not matter.  I can do a test using a spare drive in my laptop.  I have a backup that I created with WinRE Rescue Media where the OS drive (C drive) shows as G drive in the .tib.

It will take me a couple of hours, but I should be able to report the results later tonight.

I hope that some of the other MVPs can weigh in.

And if someone has a WinRE created under the prior build to compare with one created under the latest build, it would be good to know if it has changed. If so, why would that be?

Bruno,

I was able to restore a backup that was created using WinRE rescue media.  In the .tib backup, the C: drive showed up as G:  I restored the backup to an empty HDD and the laptop booted properly...absolutely no problems.

There is a caution note on the WinRE rescue media screen that warns that the drive letters may be different than when booted in Windows.

Thanks FtrPilot.

Am I correct that there has been a change in the latest version that causes the drive letters to be changed?

Is there any reason to prefer the WinRE over the Linux backup when both boot fine?

BrunoC,

The difference in drive letters from what is seen in an installed Windows OS and Recovery Media regardless if WinRE, WinPE, or Linux based has always been there.  The caution noted in the documentation and application about this has always been there.  So nothing has changed in this regard to my knowledge.

It is advised that users create Volume labels (names) for their drive volumes so that the user can determine which are correct.  In my case I add the letter value in the Volume label such as "Win 10 C".  This shows up in the boot media and I know for sure that I am working with the correct partition (volume).
