Dual Windows 8.1 + Linux system, how to exclude Linux ext4 partitions from Acronis 2018 backup

Thread needs solution

I have recently made my windows 8.1 Pro system dual boot with Linux. Acronis insists on backing up the Linux ext4 partitions where I installed on a secondary hard drive. From what I have read elsewhere this causes Acronis to perform a sector-by-sector copy on all partitions which is very s l o w. In the Exclusions list, how to I tell Acronis I do not want these partition backed up at all? The exclusion list seems to be folder oriented but the Linux partitions do not have a drive letter, so how to I explain this?
Note, on the same secondary hard drive there are 4 other Windows partitions I want to remain backed up.
I have searched many forums but have not found the appropriate exclusion mast/whatever.
Any advice gratefully received.

John, if ATI is including your second drive then it sounds like you are using 'Entire PC' for your backup source.  Once any disk drive is included in the source selection, then you cannot exclude partitions by using the Exclusions options.

For your backup task, click on the main Source panel and select Disks & Partitions from the options then shown, after which, deselect any Linux partitions that you want to be excluded from the backup.

Steve,

Thank you very much for that information. I will try it later today.

Must I do another full backup with the partitions selected or is there a way to incorporate my existing full backup into the new scheme.  I ask only because a full backup takes a couple of hours.

John, personally I would recommend making a new backup with the Linux partitions all excluded from the source selection.  If you continue with the existing backup task, then you won't see any significant reduction in size until after you have made a new full backup.

One note to advise you is that the issue with ATI using sector-by-sector mode when backing up Linux ext4 partitions is fixed in ATI 2020 where the application now recognises these partitions correctly and just backs up the used data size instead of the whole partition.

If you want to avoid this behaviour with ATI 2018 then take a look at forum topic here where another user has identified some changes that need to be made to the Linux partition to allow ATI to handle it correctly.  (I have tested this approach myself on my own Linux partitions when using ATI 2019 and it worked fine).
