Error reading Disk2
Hello,
since some time i get an
"Error" reading from Disk" with
"Sektor202.493.863 from Disk2 can not be read" and two hints:
"check the disk e. g. run chkdsk.exe"
"Details are in the VSS-Protocols (logs)"
during backup generation.
==> I run checkdisk on all drives i have in my system ==> nothing found.
I checked SMART values and tests for all disk in my system ==> nothing found
i looked at the log files, but there is only a read error documented .. no more information.
Currently I have no clue which DIsk is "Disk 2", but i limited my backup already to only the Main Disk (an SSD) in my system. So I would assume this is this the disk where the read error occurs .. but potentially it is also from the target?
I know that version 2018 is already quite old, but Acronis changed from a simple to use backuptool to a monster feature cloud based tool, so i did never update to a newer version. as i do not need and do not like these kind of tools.
Any idea how to find the bad disk, or to avoid this error?
thanks a lot for any feedback
Hermann
P.S. funny side note: the error message also recommends to create a backup of the drive ;-)
Not sure what the application thinks i just try to do ;-)

Hello Jose,
thanks a lot!
I will check this, but i have run also checks on my NAS (which is the target) in the meantime i have tried the current trial version of Acronis cyber and whatever.. .
This took over the old configuration (what was nice), so i could run the backup directly there.
And this worked fine.
So my first guess was, that this was a windows 10 update that changed some function that Acronis sused to access to the shadow copy that is used to generate the backup of my system disk.
will keep you updated..
But if this is the case i have a problem. Acronis does only sell the tool now as subscription with many features that I do not want to have.
If it was the Target disk i can get back to True image 2018 (what was a really nice tool).
if it True image is not compatible to win10 any more.. i guess i need to find another solution :-(

Hello Hermann,
Acronis True Image 2018 is compatible with the following builds of Windows 10:
- Windows 10 (all editions, including April 2018 Update) * Link to documentation
Regarding the licensing model, I anticipate that over the next few months, we will receive good news for users who hold perpetual licenses of legacy products and wish to upgrade.
Best regards.

Hello Jose,
i tried the tool from
https://kb.acronis.com/content/1638
but I could only check my source drives, not the destination drives on my NAS with it.
Did I do anything wrong?
On the destination drives i used the features provided by my NAS and all states, that everything is healty.
For me the error message regarding "failed to read Snapshot. look to the VSS log files" would indicated that it is a problem reading the shadow copies, not a problem on the destinaction disk.
The link to the compatibilty says
- "Windows 10 (all editions, including April 2018 Update)"
My Backup fails since mid of December.. i doubt, that Acronis2018 was checked against the latest windows updates.
So i still expect that it is an incompatibilty to the latest windows updates.
I would be happy to stick with Acronis as backup tool, but I guess i can not wait month if my backup with 2018 is not working any more :-(.
Sorry, but i do not intend to take any subscription that add features that i do not want to have and i do not need. I just need a backup tool... no cloud, no cyber scurity, no other fancy stuff.

Hello!
It won't check the NAS itself.
It's made to integrate the reports of the disks physically connected with the machine as HD's and external HD's.
Regarding the VSS, run this command as admin in CMD:
vssadmin list writers
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/windows…
Check if there are any errors.
You can also run the VSS doctor: https://www.acronis.com/en-us/products/vss-doctor/
Thanks in advance!

Hello Jose,
interesting ...
due to the fact, that the latest acronis version is working i did not expect a hardware issue...
- vssadmin list writes check several things and all of the ckecks end with "no Error"
- the VSS doctor reported all points as green, beside the warning that there are errors in the event log.
the google search brougth up the follwoing but I am not allowed to place hyperlinks.. :
forum_acronis_com#forum#acronis-true-image-2018-forum#bad-sectors-reported-none-found
_ is a dot
# is a /
here the solution was to check use the vendor tools to check ... I think i have done all checks here, but will re-try..
now i am still struggling with the question:
Which disk is it and how to check it?
if it is the target on my NAS (as you mentioned in the beginning).. how to check the disks there other than with the tools that synology provides?
all other checks that you mention are related to the source Disks and also the VSS is a feature of the source.. so why should the failing "Disk2" be in my target system?
My main system is booting from a Samsung SSD and i would assume this is where VSS is interacting.
the second disk is a WD HDD for data storage.. is it possible, that this is DISK2?
I will also recheck the windows event log (i assume this is what the VSScheckers event log hint is referring too).
thanks a lot ..
even confusing it seems to go into the right direction..
Hermann
p.S. I only got a !the file could not be uploaded when trying to upload the log file, so here the warning message:
Timestamp: 13.01.2024 13:42:32
Type: Error
Source: disk
Message: Fehlerhafter Block bei Gerät \Device\Harddisk0\DR0.
InstanceId: -1073479673

i found a way to identify the disk:
Get-PhysicalDisk | Select -Prop DeviceId,FriendlyName,SerialNumber
the device Id that is shown with this command seems to indicate the DRx number in the event log.
so accrording to this it would be really the WDD hdd .. not sure why this interfeares with a backup of my system disk.
originally i had a backup that does the system SSD and the HDD. After getting this error i splitted it up and made even 3 parts:
1) System disk completely (SSD)
2) drive C (system disk SSD) just all folders
3) Drive D (HDD) just all folders.
The only backup that failed was backup 1..
I will now exchange the HDD and will retry ..
if this really works I can wait until acronis is offering a solution that is not a subscription.
Main reasons is the good support that i got from you, even with my old version..

Hermann,
Please create an Acronis system report zip file then extract the disks.txt (disk report) from the zip archive and use the File > Upload option to attach it to this forum topic. This should help identify any file system error if present and lead to how to resolve it.
KB 58820: Acronis True Image: Collecting System Report
Example: this disk report shows a file system error for H: 2ndVolume 1.8TB drive / partition as indicated by 'e' shown in column C at the right side.
DA-API report version 3 PS Speed IFace Hs-Bs-Tg Model Num NT L9NO Size FSsize Free FS Type Label ABCHSV Error ---- ----- ---- ----- ----- ----- ------ --------------- ----------- ------ ---------- 1- d(4) GPT 1.8T RAID 0-0-0 ST2000DM006-2DM164 CC26 MBR ------ GPTpri -----v MSresr -----v -2 --GH 1.8T 1.8T 561G NTFS 07 NTFS, HPFS 2ndVolume.. --e--V Partition 1-2: file system FS: NTFS File System Error 0x70018: MFT bitmap is corrupted.
Running CHKSK H: /F is recommended to try to fix the bitmap corruption issue.
