External disk keeps locking my laptop

Thread needs solution

I’m using a Samsung M3 1tbyte external USB 3 drive as my backup drive. I have two Acronis scheduled backups setup, backup of System and backup of E & F partitions. I have set them up with a full then three differential backups followed by another full then three differential again with cleanup enabled. I have also tried using incremental but that makes no difference either.

Sometimes all works well but more often than not the backups seem to ‘lockup’ in that it gets so far and will go no further and if I just let it run, after several hours it gives up the ghost and sends me an error failure message (see attached file).

The errors can occur at any time, after 3% or 75% or anywhere%, it doesn’t make any difference. The other thing is that when it is failing it causes my laptop to fail to respond, I cannot open some programs and if I try to reboot it sits there at the restarting blue screen until I disconnect the cable to the Samsung drive. If I then try the backup again it might (sometimes) complete the backup.

I have done several disk surface tests on the Samsung, it never shows any failures under Windows or Seagate tools. I have tried copying whatever backups I have onto another external disk (Barracuda) and then re-formatting the Samsung, then starting again with fresh backups from ATI. It might then work for a couple of backups but then it will start failing again! I also sent the Samsung back to the makers but they returned it with no fault found.

I’ve noticed that when it begins to fail (I can usually tell when it sticks on a certain percentage of the backup) I cannot stop the backup and I cannot close ATI unless I disconnect the Samsung. I can close the backup by using Task Manager though. If I sometimes fail to remove the disk cable and the disk is still flashing away the laptop misbehaves, e.g. If I try to open ATI it gets stuck on the window ‘applying user settings’ and I then have to disconnect the disk, after that laptop works OK.

Can anyone offer any clues as to what is happening? It is so frustrating as I cannot build up enough good backups to give me a choice of restoring options and gain confidence in them!.

Vlad, with this type of issue the most common cause is going to be in the connection to the external drive or in the power requirements of the same.

If you haven't done so already, try using a different USB 3 cable and connecting to a different USB 3 port, preferably one of the rear ports if this is on a desktop / tower computer.

If you are connecting using any form of USB hub, then remove this if possible and connect directly to the USB port on the computer, or else try to use a powered USB hub.

Check your USB settings in the Power options for Windows and check that it is not allowed to be either to sleep or be disabled if the OS thinks the device is idle etc.

Hi Steve, for the moment I don't have another USB cable for the Samsung as it has a special connector into the drive. I have been using a USB port directly into the laptop ever since I got the M3, not through a hub. I am now using another USB port (direct) to see if that helps.

I can't see any USB settings under Power Options.

Ah, got it! Both 'on battery' and 'plugged in' are enabled.

By the bye, I use my laptop as a desktop, so it is pretty well plugged in all the time.

Vlad, best to disable the USB selective suspend when plugged in as that is not what you want to happen when writing backup data to the external drive.

OK, that's done. These aren't things I would tinker with as like I say, I hardly ever use the laptop away from my desk, only when away from home and then I plug it in most of the time.

Understand, guess the next step is to try your backup to the drive and see if the setting change makes a difference.  This is a case where Microsoft think they know better than the user with some of these settings which they default to being enabled.

Just done an 8.7gb backup successfully of my system but when I started a backup of my E&F partitions it has been stuck on 8.3gb for some time now with 7 1/2 hours remaining! Yet this had been backed up this morning no problem (47.7gb) so why would it fail this time?

So USB settings corrected, different USB port tried.

Vlad, I would say to wait this out a little longer and check to see if you are still seeing write errors to the external drive for the E&F backup task?

If you are, then I would recommend trying a different USB cable to the drive.

I would suggest that you run chkdsk /r on the E and F partitions or drives which ever the case may be.  This should be done from an admin command prompt as examples:

chkdsk E: /r E, then

chkdsk F: /r

Note spaces in the commands, they must be included.

 

Steve, Still seeing write errors at different parts of the backups, no pattern at all to it. Doesn't matter what backup job I use. I have even cloned both jobs and deleted all the files and then done a quick format (maybe I should have done a full format!) but even after that the backups are failing consistantly.

I notice that when a backup job starts it tells me I can stop ATI and just rely on the system tray icon. Because I prefer to use the normal ATI interface I have been starting ATI again. Will doing that cause any problems only it does seem as though that is roughly when the backups stall.

Another thing on the same subject, system tray says 0% complete but Backup and Activity say 20.45GB, that can't be right?

Enchantec, I carried out the chkdsk tests which I have done several times recently but there are never any faults found when I check the logs in Event Viewer.

Are there hidden partitions or even other partitions on the disks in question?  If yes those partitions would need chkdsk run on them as well. 

I have never had TI cause a running backup task to hiccup by starting the app while a task is running.  Possible I suppose but I have not run into it.

The percentage indicators shown are just rough estimates and are notorious for being inaccurate.

Well now, this is embarrassing! It seems the Samsung M3 doesn't like being too near a heat source.It is usually about 18" from a radiator and as it only has a short cable I had nowhere else to put it. And what with the weather being cold the rad has been on full...

So I did what I should have done a long time ago only it didn't come to mind until Sunday. I turned the rad off. And it hasn't failed at all in any of the backups I have done, some of them 200+GB so I'm now pretty confident I have sorted it now.

I'm expecting a new longer cable tomorrow so I will be able to relocate the disk.

Steve, I'm guessing the the disk drive has an SSD controller. Would that explain it, do you think?

The drive will most likely be a SATA drive so will have a USB to SATA adapter within the housing, but most electronics tend to be sensitive to temperature. I tend to buy the empty cases and put my own drives in them so that I can reuse some of the older HDD SATA drives that I have replaced with larger or faster ones (SSD or HDD).

Heat issue may have caused a thermal shutdown of the device.  A built in safety valve in the device to avoid damage by overheated conditions.
