Fail to read sector

Thread needs solution

I have used TrueImage 2018 for many years for creating full backups from PC (Win10) to a USB drive every month. But the last 2 times, backup stopped with message: 'Fail to read sector nnn...   To check disk use Check Disk Utility...'

There are buttons on message to Ignore or Ignore All and clicking Ignore may lead to completion of backup or finding another Fail to read message.  But the backup is completed if Ignore a message or two.

I ran the Check Disk Utility and Win has no issues with the C or D (recovery) drives.

So my question is this a TrueImage issue or how to avoid it.  Many thanks

Ben, welcome to these public User Forums.

Any 'Fail to read sector' error messages do indicate that a disk is failing regardless of CHKDSK not finding an error.  This is because CHKDSK cannot check any hidden / system partitions on the disk because these do not have a drive letter allocated.

Dedicated diagnostic utilities from the disk manufacturers take the longest time to complete the checks, but provide the most accurate methods of checking whether the disk is good or needs replacement:
 - Western Digital drives:
Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows

 - Seagate disks: SeaTools for Windows

 - HGST disks: HGST Windows Drive Fitness Test (WinDFT)

 - Intel SSDs: Intel Solid State Drive Toolbox

 - Samsung drives: Samsung Magician

 - ADATA drives: ADATA SSD ToolBox

 - Kingston SSDs: Kingston SSD Toolbox, Kingston SSD Manager

 - Transcend SSDs: Transcend SSD Scope

 - Silicon Power disks: SP ToolBox

 - Toshiba disks: Toshiba PC Diagnostic Tool Utility
