Failed to read sectors

Thread needs solution

I am having an issue with cloning a hard drive. It is throwing an error about can't read certain sectors. I get the CRC error 0x100155. I read other forums and I changed the sata ports the hard drives were plugged into. The only thing I haven't done was a CHKDSK because the original hard drive is good. It boots up into Windows without any problems. I don't know what to do. This is the tenth time I am trying this trying different things to no avail.

Jacob, welcome to these User Forums.

What is the exact message you are seeing here?  I assume that it is something along the lines of 'Failed to read sector 123,456,789 of disk 1" or similar.

With these types of errors, this is a bad sector on the drive and cloning is much more sensitive to these issues than using Backup (and Restore) can be.

Bad sectors can occur on any part of the source drive, including in partitions which do not have a drive letter assigned such as hidden/system and recovery partitions.

The first important thing here is to identify exactly which disk drive is giving these errors?  Acronis numbers disk drives starting at 1 but Windows Disk Management starts from 0, so you would need to adjust the error disk number accordingly.

Next, identify the make of disk drive then go to the manufacturers support website and look for drive diagnostic tools that are provided to do a full diagnostic test of the entire drive.

See the list shown in the Troubleshooting section of a KB document for diagnostic tools from a number of main manufacturers of disk drives.
