Google FileStream and ATIH 2018 backup plan

Thread needs solution

I have upgraded my Google Drive for my institution account as a message that this tool is going away soon arrived. I chose Google FileStream upgrade from the choices of upgrade.  The old Google Drive PC software synced real files to a local drive folder.  The Google FileStream creates a drive G:\ and creates an offline database of data in a user folder.  G:\ is accessable offline using the database data that syncs later.

If you require a backup of Google FileStream files, you can backup the user database data  that is accessable only with Google Filestream program on the PC.

Will ATIH 2018 backup G:\ if selected whilst connected to the Google FileStream so that real files are stored for a restore independent of the Google FileStream program?  This is important as the database data will delete if it detects an account logoff.  Thereafter it must rebuild again.

The reply I think will need the forum members to provide feedback for this enhancement because the chat went like this:

As I understand, Google Drive creates a drive G:\ and creates an offline database of data in a user folder. You want to know using Acronis True Image 2018 if we can backup the drive G:\ that was created by Google Drive. And in the event of data lose, you want to know if you will be able to recover the G: drive. Am I correct?

Thank you for the confirmation.

Unfortunately it is not supported by Acronis True Image as google drive is a 3rd party cloud.

However I will take this as a feedback and forward it to our development team and management team.

I think this is important as the cloud holds institutional files such as most educational institutions from schools to universities.  For students and staff they need to backup their files, especially if the servers go down of they leave the institution.

If your Google Drive / Filestream keeps files in their Cloud until such time as you access them, then all that Acronis would backup would be symbolic links to the files in the cloud, not the files themselves, and these would appear to be zero length files.

A similar issue was raised in the forums over the last week for OneDrive with their new Files On Demand feature which does the same.

If your files are all local files, plus are not being locked by the Google application to prevent other applications accessing them, then you should be able to make an Acronis backup of them.
