Here we go again

Thread needs solution

So, after months of reliable backup operations I find, yet again, that a restore from backup is less than straightforward. I thought that ATI 2018 was much improved from previous versions where restores were more likely to fail than work.

The missing file shown in the screenshot below was missing but all .tib files from all of my successful backups were present (s1 - s11). Why is ATI 2018 looking for a s15 file when my last backup (today) is sequentially correct and the 'end of the line' named as s11?

On ignoring the error I was presented with the same error for each file from s15 to s1 until the recovery interface finally appeared.

Why is this happening? Yet again my faith in ATI is waning as the reliability of the recovery process is questionable to say the least.

Sean, sorry but you are mixing up the error and backup sequence here.

The error is for backup sequence _b1_s15_v1 range of .tib files.

You second screen shot shows only backup sequence _b2_s1 to s11 .tib files.

So, from the information available, it looks like you have deleted backup sequence b1 and its associated files and have done this outside of using the Acronis automatic cleanup rules which would have updated the Acronis Database to reflect that these files had been deleted.

The errors you are seeing are because the Database still holds information about the deleted files.

Steve,

The original backup was deleted using the 'delete' option within the ATI interface so why hasn't this updated the database?

When you refer to ' done this outside of using the Acronis automatic cleanup rules ' what should be done to delete an old backup and create a new one?

Many thanks,

Sean

Sean, I haven't known the delete option for a task in the GUI to leave information behind in the database so no idea as to why this is the case for you here?

I backup to my Synology NAS and use the automatic cleanup rules to save having to manage the backup files.  The settings I use are shown in the image below:

Hi @ Sean Bond  ,

Are you dual-booting, by any chance? Or have you restored an Image?

Hi,

No. I deleted the existing backup chain through the interface and created a new one. There we no warnings or errors at any point.

I don't like how ATI always seems to throw up errors\issues at the point of restore after many weeks\months of supposedly trouble-free backups.

Why doesn't the product check the database\XML\whatever structure\validity at the point of backup so that any issue can be fixed at that point rather than scaring the living daylights out of the user at restore time?

Many thanks,

Sean

Sean, to my knowledge, ATI does validate the backup chain against the database for both backup and recovery operations, hence the type of error for missing version file being posted in both circumstances.  You can also perform a manual validation either manually or by schedule to double check the integrity of the chain.

As I said before, your specific circumstance of the Database information not being resolved after deleting a backup task is a 'new one' for me - it is not something I recollect other users reporting here in the forums, nor something I have personally encountered (and have done the same type of action many times).
