How do I copy Windows 10 systems drive via Backup and Recovery

Thread solved

Hi,

I'm new to Acronis True Image.  I have a laptop that I need to upgrade the internal SSD from 500GB to 1TB.  I don't have an external enclosure that I can put the new drive in for clone.  Nor do I have a desktop that I can put both drives in.

Is it possible to do it in 2 steps with a bootable USB?

1. Run backup for the entire disk (I can see 3 partitions, EFI, C: drive, Recovery) to an external USB.  This option appears to be only available in the installed application on Windows, not the bootable USB

I have found guide under Backing up disks and partitions  Is this correct?

1a. Is there a step to de-activate Acronis True Image on the old drive?

I have not found any guide

2. Boot from USB.  Run Recovery to restore from the external USB to the new drive.  Is there any special steps required to make the new drive bootable?

I have found guide under Recovering your system to a new disk under bootable media  Is this correct?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the user forum. The procedure you propose is the best way of doing what you want to do. Please note, it is possible to create the backup using the recovery media, you do not need to do so from within Windows. I would recommend that you do so using the recovery media.

When you boot up the recovery media, make sure you select UEFI version of the recovery media rather than the Legacy version.

You will not have to reactivate ATI as it is the same computer, just a different drive.

Acronis recommend that after you have created the backup, that you remove the old drive from the notebook, then place the new drive in, followed by the recovering to the new drive. You may need to adjust the partition sizes after doing the "cloning"; if so use the free version of the Minitool Partition Wizard. You should leave the the UEFI and the Recovery partition at the same size, and increase the size of the Windows partition.

Please confirm the version of ATI that you are using, you have posted in the ATI 2018 forum and the current version is ATI 2021. There are 3 versions of the recovery media, Windows PE, Windows RE and Linux. In most cases the Windows RE version is the best one to use - called Simple in the creation wizard.

Any instruction on how to do the full system backup from the recovery media?  When I use the downloaded bootable ISO, it does not have the full system backup as shown in step 6.  Rather I only have disk backup.

I have downloaded the bootable ISO.  Is that different from recovery media created by the desktop application?

Yes, I'm using 2018.  I don't have the latest version.

Thanks

I have gone through backup.  In recovery, ATI can't detect the new SSD in the step of Destination of Disk 1.  It's not showing up in Tools -> Add New Disk either.

The manufacturer's recovery USB can detect the SSD and install OS.

After that, ATI still won't be able to detect the new SSD.

--- Update

The issue was downloaded ISO.  It's probably Linux, not Windows RE.  As a hint, It does not support the touchpad.  I then created the rescue media from the Windows installation and it was able to detect the new SSD.  And the touchpad works as well.

The recovery does not have a disk/partition setting step.  It seems automatically maximize drive C correctly -- I missed the step to click on the partition -- it will bring up partition setting on the left

Now it's says in progress, though I don't see the progress bar moving at all.  Will let it run and report back

Thanks

Thanks for the update. Yes, the version downloaded from Acronis www uses Linux.

It can take a while for the restore to complete; depends on the speed of the backup drive (particularly if you connect to USB 2 rather than USB 3 port).

That recovery stalled and I had to cancel.  The destination drive has Windows 10 installed.  I guess that might be the reason.

After initialization again (the disk became unallocated), I was able to repeat the step and it was successful.  The progress bar started moving within 1 min and finished in 20 min (70GB image).

Also in step 9 of the guide, must click a partition to get the "Setting of partition 1-1" menu on the left.  This can resize the partition.

The system booted successfully after recovery.

Thanks

Thanks for the update. Glad you had success.
