The initial full backup version is not accessible at the moment

I am getting the subject error, intermittently, i.e. some days it works and some days it doesn't.

Here is the setup: two computers on a home network, both running Windows 8 Pro and ATIH 2018. Each computer is backed up to a folder on the other computer. Each backup folder is added to the exclusion list on each computer. Computer A does its backups at 1am and Computer B at 4am. It all started well and working fine for 2-3 weeks. Then, one day, computer B's backup failed, saying it couldn't access computer A. I tried a manual backup a few hours later that same day and the backup worked fine first time, without changing a thing. The next day the scheduled backup at 4am failed again. And again the next day.

Totally baffled, I changed the scheduled from 4am to 5am, thinking that something was happening on computer A at 4am, preventing it from being accessed by computer B. It worked for 8 days straight. These 2 computers are at a client of mine. and the client did not forward me any failed emails since it resumed working, so I assumed the schedule time change had fixed it.

To be sure, I connected to computer B remotely to check ATIH's activity. Indeed it was showing that the backups were happening. Good. There was a popup from iTunes to download a new version and update, so I did. And rebooted the computer as requested. I did not connect to the computer again after the reboot.

The next morning the client forwarded me the email showing the backup had failed on computer B again. Now I am at a loss and my client is getting aggravated, understandably so.

Here is the content of the email showing the failure (Gerry-Office is computer B, where the backup fails):

Any idea what is going on? Any suggestions on how to diagnose this problem further? Note that backups on computer A, are running fine (and stored on computer B). It's computer B's backups that fail, and not always.

Pierre, the log shows that there are network issues at work in this problem.

Error 0xb007f: The initial full backup version is not accessible at the moment.

error 0xb00eb: Network disconnected.

error 0xfff0: The network location cannot be reached. For information about network troubleshooting, see Windows Help

Error 0xb03e9: Cannot open the backup.

You may want to check the power saving options for Computer B, and whether the network adapter is being powered off?

Hi Steve,

As usual you came to the rescue quickly. Thank you for that. And apparently the problem is fixed. Indeed the setting to turn off the network adapter to save power was checked, so I unchecked it. It's been 4-5 days and my client has not forwarded me any failure email (yet).

To be sure I'd like to wait a few more days though, and see if it still works after the computer is rebooted. For now I am hopeful. So thanks again. I will come back here should something happen.

Well well well. The error came back this morning, after 11 days without errors. My client is not happy. For completeness, here is this morning's error email, in case there is additional information that was not in the previous one in my original post.

I am at a loss. And I am pretty sure it's going to work tomorrow, without changing a thing. I did check that the power saving option for the network adapter was still unchecked, and it was. I am at a loss.

The next check point for me here would be NetworkPath: \\Bonnie-office\Acronis Backups\ and ensure that the adapter power settings in this target location are also not set to turn off the network adapter to save power as you had on the source computer?

Spot on. Thank you for your very speedy reply. I had to uncheck the same setting on the target computer, i.e. computer A. Hopefully that should do it once and for all for computer B, but I am going to give it a good 2-3 weeks before declaring victory.

Now for the $64k question. Why didn't the error ever occur on computer A but kept happening on computer B? The setup is symmetric on each computer.

So I looked at the power settings again on both computers. Computer B, where the error happened once in a while, had the hard disk to never go to sleep, while Computer A (the target for Computer B) has it set to 20 minutes.

I didn't want to change the hard disk setting on either computer to only have one parameter change at a time. We shall see. Besides, the hard disk should wake up and start spinning when needed. I wonder if ATI times out too quickly.

Pierre, I wouldn't expect the hard disk timeout setting to make any real difference here as during a backup the drive wouldn't be idle for long enough to qualify to put the drive to sleep and the initial access should cause a sleeping drive to wake up and be awake for any subsequent access even after a timeout within ATI.
