Lost as a Goose-Backup Fail or SLOW

Thread needs solution

Hello Everyone,

After reading a few threads I know I am way over my head here, but I do have a few questions so please do not laugh.

I am a pro photographer among other things. My primary machine was built for editing images and data storage in my small business. The machine is an Intel 7700K with a Maximus Hero IX motherboard. The drives consist of two M2s, four SSDs in a RAID 5 and four WD BLACK mechanical hard drives in a RAID 5. One M2 has my Windows 10 Pro and program files. The RAID 5 with four SSDs stores data that is accessed frequently. The WD mechanical drives are for longer term image storage.  My RAID controller is a LSI MR9271.

I started switching to digital cameras about six or seven years ago. The RAW files right out of the camera were somewhere around 10MB. Now, depending on what camera I am using, images files range from 50MG to 90MG before editing.  A 90 MG image file can easily double after editing and it is not uncommon to have files in the GB range. To say the least, my storage and backup needs are changing rapidly.

My offsite backup is through ATT and, in my opinion, works well and is secure. As many of Y'all know, secure and reliable is one thing and speed of recovery is much different. I found that out last fall with a major hardware failure. My shop, which is only occupied by me has three workstations. My ethernet is wired with Cat 6 and everything is 1000 Base T with the exception of two printers.  Without going into detail, hardware seems fine. My internet upload speed is faster than transferring files from computer to computer.

My onsite backup was done with a USB 3 WD 8TB external drive. Without going into detail, I have no confidence in that type drive and am in the process of changing. My plan, assuming I get things working right, is to utilize the two other workstations with large WD Green drives for onsite backup.  FYI-they arrived while I was writing this.

Here are my problems I am having. Sorry this is so long but I feel the facts are important. Backups run fine from my primary computer to the WD external. I tried a backup from my RAID 5 SSD drive to my internal mechanical drives witch is also a Raid 5 and about 650 GB of data. After 12 hours, it was still running. The transfer rate from computer to computer is also very slow (unusable).  File transfer speed is  10 MB/sec or less, sometimes measured in KB/sec range. This is the same whether it is a simple file copy or a backup. There is a bottleneck somewhere and I am out of places to look.

Network speed is good when I use various utilities to check it. Switches have been switched or bypassed with no luck. I do not think there is a problem with hardware.  I feel there is a setting(s) I am not aware of that is wrong.

Even though I have been dealing with backups from a Unix system years ago with large tapes to what we are using now, this is one of my weak links along with networking.

Thank you for reading this and I very much appreciate any and all suggestions.  In other works, I need help like a dead man needs a coffin.

Y'all have a wonderful weekend.

Roger

I assume you are using a PCIe raid card; is this for the 4 WD Black drives? What make card is it? Have your tried updating the drivers for it.

One point, in the past WD has not recommended Black Drives for use in raid arrays. It is always better to use drives designed to be used in raid arrays, such as the WD Red drives, which if memory serves me correctly, are less expensive than the Black drives (the Red Pro may be more expensive).

Unfortunately I cannot think why you are only seeing issues when backing up with AScronis. Are you by chance using Bitlocker on the source array?

Thank you Ian,

My RAID controller is a LSI MR9271 and everything is up to date.  Results are about the same going from M2 to M2.

The machine runes fine.  I am still lost.

So am I. (Lost, that is.) Hopefully someone else may have an idea.

One thing you could do is to download the MVP Log Viewer (discussed in this thread) and available via this Knowledge Base article. The log files may give a hint as to what is causing the problem.

Hello Ian,

I uninstalled True Image 2018 and reinstalled.  That seemed to help.  I will know in a day or two.

Have a great week,

Roger

Thanks for the update; hopefully reinstallation will solve the problem.
