Managing my backups to NAS - a bit confused....

Hello, am running True image 2018 having upgraded from True Image 2017.

I am not convinced my backup options are set correctly and would love someone to have a peek at what I have going on here.

So on this basis how many files ought my server to contain? Because it seems like I have too many.

It has been deleting old files hence the first one being full 6 but if I have selected "store no more than 2 version chains" why do I seem to have 7 chains?

Many thanks and apologies if I missed something obvious.

James...welcome to these user forums.

It looks like you did an "upgrade" install and the backup task continues to create the backups but does not delete the old backups per the backup settings shown in your post above. Am I correct?

Did the backup task run properly in ATI 2017 by deleting the old backups per the settings?

ATI stores NAS passwords in multiple locations.  It appears to me that in the upgrade install, ATI has lost the NAS password needed to delete old backups.

I am not sure how to correct the problem.

My only suggestion is to create a new backup task...make sure to give it a different file name.

Edit the existing task to "Do not schedule"

Once the new task is working properly, you can remove the old backup task.

Thanks, I am not sure what the state of old backup culling was with TI2017.

So therefore not certain where all the cruft collecting started.

You would not advise me to just delete some of the old chains manually then?

James, you can manually delete your old version chains but having done so, you must do a validation for the backup task that created those chains, taking the Ignore option for each deleted file that produces a popup error message.  This is assuming you still have that task showing in the ATI GUI .

James,

If disk space is an issue, then you could delete some of the old chains manually.  However, as Steve notes, you would have to validate the remaining files.  If disk space is not a problem, then I would wait until the new backup task completes a full cycle.

I would also recommend downloading the Log Viewer at:

https://kb.acronis.com/content/59335?build=9660&edition=16&gaID=5225286…

The ti_demon logs may provide information on why the old logs were not deleted.

James,

You can edit the network credentials by selecting the Destination of the backup in the GUI then click on your backup device to select it.  The Edit credentials button should become active at the bottom of the window and allow you to edit your credentials.   Entering your credentials again here will reset those credentials on the selected device.

Thank you all for your help - really appreciated. I decided to go with the initial advice of create new backup task then delete the old one. All completed and will keep an eye on things.

Got heaps of space on my server now! I was wondering why it was getting so full :/

James, thanks for the update/feedback, just need to key an eye on the new backups and check that automatic cleanup is working correctly to avoid filling the server storage again.

James, I am glad it's working and thanks for the feedback...
