Partion Backup

Thread solved

I am using Acronis 2018. When I select the source as disk partition for D Drive (SD drive on my Surface Pro) the back works away and I have a large image file on my backup drive. When I open up the back the D Drive shows but the folder is empty. Any idea what's going on?

Lorne, welcome to these public User Forums.

Sorry but more information is needed to understand this issue.

Is your D: drive an SD card, if so, what size of card (GB's) and how is it formatted?

Are you creating a Disk & Partitions backup for this D: drive?

How are you opening the backup image file to see the contents of the backup?
Are you doing this from the ATI 2018 GUI using the Recovery page, or are you opening the .tib file in Explorer (by double-clicking on the .tib file)?

The 200G SD Drive is mapped to the D Drive.  I am using the ATI explorer to view the files (i.e. double clicking), which works properly for the C Drive.  It does show the D Drive, but the drill down then show "this folder is empty".  The windows explorer shows a 122 G file.

When I open the recovery tool, it doesn't appear to have an explorer option to view.

Lorne, how is your SD card formatted?  Is this using NTFS, FAT32, exFAT ?

Right-click on the SD card in Explorer and select Properties to see what it shows?

Next, what does your File Explorer Options >> View settings show (this is in the Control Panel)?

If you don't have 'Show hidden files, folders and drives' enabled, try doing so.

To put the above in context, I am able to make a backup of my test 16GB SD card (formatted as NTFS) then double-click on the backup image file in Explorer and see all the files & folders from the SD card in the backup file.

My SD card is formatted with exFat.  My explorer does have the "Show hidden files, folders and drives".

I will try and find another SD card to test the formatting option to see it what is the issue.  Thx

Lorne, thanks for clarifying that you are backing up an exFAT formatted SD card, which then explains why you cannot see the files from the backup image.

See the ATI 2020 User Guide: Supported file systems where it has the following caveats:

  • FAT16/32/exFAT * **

* File systems are supported only for disk or partition backup/recovery operations.

** File systems are supported only for disk or partition recovery operations (without resizing).

This limitation has been present in multiple versions of ATI

The alternative approach here would be to make a Files & Folders backup of the data on your exFAT SD card instead of making a Disks & Partitions backup image which will create the older style .tib backup file and can show the contents without any issue.

My recollection is that ATI 2018 had no support for exFAT. Support was (if I recall correctly) introduced in ATI 2019.

1.3.3 Supporte d file systems
 FAT16/32
 NTFS
 Ext2/Ext3/Ext4 *
 ReiserFS *
Note: ReiserFS partitions and disks cannot be backed up to Acronis Cloud.
 Linux SWAP *
* The Ext2/Ext3/Ext4, ReiserFS, and Linux SWAP file systems are supported only for disk or partition backup/recovery operations. You cannot use Acronis True Image 2018 for file-level operations with these file systems (file backup, recovery, search, as well as image mounting and file recovering from images). You also cannot perform backups to disks or partitions with these file systems.
If a file system is not supported or is corrupted, Acronis True Image 2018 can copy data using a sector-by-sector approach

Ian

I did a move of all my SD card data and reformatted to NTFS, moved it back and backed it up using the partition option.  Using the explorer, I now see the files in the backup.

Thanks for your suggestion.  I wasn't sure if an upgrade was even going to work.  Sounds like it might have based on one of the comments.  Things are fine now.  I hope this might help anyone else.

Lorne, glad to hear that the change to NTFS has resolved this issue for you.

Please note: that ATI 2020 still does not show the contents for exFAT formatted backup images as this limitation about this format remains the same.
