A Problem With Backups Ending on a Shutdown and A New Backup Starting

Thread needs solution

Hi . . . Everyone, I hope you're having a Happy Thanksgiving, rather than reading this, but I'm not sure what to do.

I am currently running a 19day backup (yeah, I have WiFi; can't afford direct-connect).  Problem is, this is my 5th restart of the backup from the beginning.  I somehow lost everything I had backed up before, so it's back to this.

Anyway, the Acronis backup panel says, if I shutdown the Desktop, the backup will restart; but it doesn't.  The app' comes back and says, "Backup Complete."  Ugh!

So what do I do?  Should I restart the backup sitting there, or delete it and start a new one?  I did try to restart it, but it started by creating a whole NEW backup.  Needless to say, I can only afford one.  I am wondering if these error don't stem from my downloading files to my parent's Desktop, during an extended stay there.  I hope you can shed some light on this for me.

Thanks . . . And, Happy Thanksgiving!!

Hi Bill, we don't tend to celebrate Thanksgiving on this side of the big pond, same as we ignore July 4th too!

Saw the following on Twitter the other day and had to laugh - perhaps this is one that Donald gave a pardon to?

I guess I have more questions at this point than answers to offer you..

What is the reason why the computer is being shutdown when you have a long running backup active?

What type of backup are you doing here that is taking so long to complete, even if it is being done over WiFi?

As far as I understand, it is only backups to the Acronis Cloud that have the ability to recover / resume after being interrupted by the computer being shutdown or restarted, so I suspect that when you see the whole backup being restarted, that is correct for a local / network backup task.

The only way I can suggest to try to minimise the impact of needing to shutdown or restart the computer, is to try to split your backup into as many smaller segments as you can, if possible.

Ex: Have one backup that only includes the main Windows OS & Program Files but excludes your User data.

Have a separate backup for all Documents / another for Pictures / another for Videos etc.

Hi Steve!  Thanks for letting me know where you are!  Shucks!  I didn't realize how far ranging this thing was when I signed-on!  Well, if you were over here in these parts, I was sending best wishes and still do!  Your insights are great and very helpful too!

Well, anyway, it appears I'm backing up the whole system, which I found out recently was kinda silly.  Total disk space is about 600G.  I still have 3 days and some hours to go!  What I was thinking is once the thing finishes is to get another TB and back it up properly like you're doing.  I didn't realize until last week I could do it by disk!  Yeah, I know!  'Problem is I still get a bit lost in their website at times.

On restarts/shutdowns, I've kept them to a minimum.  Yes!  I have learned my lesson!  I did have to re-install Office-365, installed incorrectly and needed a restart, so I paused Acronis and restarted.  The disk space shown as used was reduced dramatically, but the days to finish did not.  All so odd.  Anyway, all my previous data backed up IS there, so I'm not "sweating it."

Thanks for your great answers, Steve!  Have a great weekend and take care!

(Love the pic' by the way.  'Had a bunch of turkeys living in my old town in CA.  They'd fly up on the roof at night, when they're younger, so the coyotes wouldn't get them. (I've attached a pic' of some ladies and young toms, who don't yet have their colors). Once they get that guy's size they can't fly, but they're so big coyotes won't take them on.  There'll be 3 or 4 big guys and they will stand guard over their ladies and their babies.  Kind of miss that place.  Not much wild-life (of the animal variety) in Las Vegas.  Being in the desert, you'll see a road-runner or two, but not much else.  Anyway, good pic'!  Leave it to Trump to stir something up when attention on him wanes.  :-)

Bill, thanks for the update, glad the backup is making progress.

I have been over in the US for Thanksgiving some years back, but I was much further north up in Rochester, Minnesota when working on assignment for IBM on 3 month stints.  A whole lot colder than you are likely to have seen down in CA and Las Vegas but probably very similar for summer temperatures when the extremes changed from minus 30F (with wind chill) to plus 90F and above.
