Recurring 'error occurred while writing to file'
New to True Image. Just to ensure I didn't lose anything I backed up to an old external HD - worked perfectly. Then I deleted the files on my current HD (Seagate FlexDrive) and tried to repeat what I had done with the old HD. Error message 'Error occurred while writing the file’. Looking at the log it gives error as 0x40003 but no other details. Tried many options, reformat HD, back up entire PC, back up disks and partition and also back up selected files, all fail with the same error. Uninstalled, reinstalled, no effect. Checked and reformatted external HD. Don’t know if this is of significance but it always fails about 100-110 GB into the process, regardless of whether I am trying to back up 220GB or 800 GB. Once the error is flagged the program just slows everything down. Anything I click just takes forever. Only fixed by shutting down PC and starting again. Spent a whole day doing this and don’t have a clue what’s going on. Can anyone provide any suggestions? Really appreciate any help.
Windows 10, latest version of True Image 2018 (build 11530).
Thanks in anticipation.

First off – thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.
I have downloaded the MVP Log Viewer and attached the files from my last two attempts below (instead of the error message coming up 100GB or so into the back up it’s now happening almost immediately). I can’t see anything on the logs that indicates a problem but I would be classified as ‘knowing enough to be dangerous’ when it comes to computers.
I have a C and a D drive internally. C drive is a Samsung SSD850 500 GB and the D drive is a Toshiba DT01ACA100. My old external HD is a My Book (this is the drive that I managed to get a successful back up onto at the first attempt). The current external HD is a FA GoFlex Desk. Not 100% sure what you mean by how is it formatted. The MyBook I don’t know but the FA GoFlex Desk is GPT/NTFS. Attached is a pdf of a screenshot from the Disk Management program that may tell you more about how the drives are formatted. Every time the back up fails I have to initialize the FA GoFlex Desk drive again, and when I try to do this an error message comes up ‘The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error’. I need to shut down the desktop, restart, then unplug the FA GoFlex Desk and plug it in again to allow me to initialize.
I used the Seagate diagnostic tool which shows no problems and the firmware is up to date for the FA GoFlex Desk.
What I am trying to do is back up parts of my C and D drives to the FA GoFlex Desk external HD. Both the new and old external HDs were connected via a USB port.
I get the error message during the back up, used to be 100GB into it, now it’s almost immediate.

Bill, there are no file attachments for your reply above to show your Disk Management view of your drives.
I suspect that your FA GoFlex Desk drive may be a USB 3.0 drive and that there may be an issue with either the cable used to connect it, or the drive is asking for more power from the USB port you have it connected to than the port can safefly provide.
The log entries only confirm that there is an issue when trying to write to the drive.
I further suspect that if you repeat the same Files & Folders backup task with your older WD MyBook drive as the destination, that this would run successfully.

Thanks for your help. I will try plugging the FA GoFlex into the same USB port as I used for the WD MyBook and see what happens. I uploaded a file that showed the Disk Management screenshot as I could not find a way to paste it into the message.
Let you know how things progress.
thanks again.

Steve,
Tried connecting to the same USB port as I used for the old external HD (WD MyBook) and also connecting with another USB cable from the GoFlex to the same USB as I used for the old HD. Same result - error writing etc. Is there anything else I can try? I wouldn't mind if I had to buy a new external HD but I have no confidence it will make any difference. I don't even want to plug in my old external HD to try that again as that's the only back up I have now and I don't want to jeopardize that.
Again any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Bill, is the GoGlex drive powered from the USB port or does it have its own independent power supply?
If it is powered from the USB port, then I would suggest getting hold of a powered USB Hub and try connecting via that instead. This is important if trying to power USB 3.0 devices from a USB 2.0 port, as the USB 3.0 devices need nearly double the power of their USB 2.0 cousins.

Go Flex drive is powered from the mains electricity Steve.

Ok, that eliminates power as a source of this issue - the next check is the power options for your computer and in particular, whether you have USB set to enabled for USB selective suspend? There are normally two settings if the computer is a laptop, i.e. one for on battery, one for plugged in.

Thanks for your help, it's great when someone is willing to put in the effort to help those with less knowledge. I borrowed one of my son's old back up drives and everything worked perfectly!! I then decided to buy a new back up HD and it worked perfectly too.
The FA GoFlex Desk passed every test I tried without any issues. I can write small files to it. I started a Windows Back Up (ie the Windows 10 back up that comes as part of the package) and it started to back up but I didn't let it run too long. With True Image it usually backed up 100 GB of data before the error but this started to get a bit more unpredictable and it started giving the error message almost immediately. After running check disk on the old HD disk and reformatting it usually went back to the 100-110 GB of data backed up before the error. The USB cable seems to be OK too, changed that but didn't change anything.
I am going to investigate a little further and will let you know if there is any progress.
Thanks again, really appreciate your help.
Bill

Bill, thanks for the update and glad that you have a solution (of sorts) with the borrowed disk and your new disk. Sometimes a drive just goes bad with no obvious reason, so perhaps the GoFlex drive internal logic board is the failing part rather than the spinning disk mechanical part, but short of returning it to Seagate for indepth diagnostic analysis, the drive is probably due for scrapping!
