size of backup file of system disk changed radically

Thread needs solution

My system disk (drive c:) has about 110GB in use, which typically produces a .tib file of about 55GB. When I backed it up today, however--a full back up--the backup file was only 28GB. I ran the Windows error checking tool and it did find errors, which it fixed; however when I then ran another backup it still came out only 28GB. Any ideas about what's going on here? Thanks.

Bill, sorry but very difficult to give you an answer based on the information given so far.

Please use the MVP Log Viewer tool (link below) to check the logs for your various backup task runs, in particular look for differences in the logs between when the backup file size was 55GB and when it changed to 28GB.

If you are running Windows 10, then check whether you are including the Windows.old folder in your backup image?  This is a temporary folder for use when Windows does regular updates to a new version, so can occupy up to around 20GB (for a previous version of Windows 10).
