[Solved] Acronis is not able to create Volume-Snapshot
Hi together,
I've big troubles using Acronis. One of them i'll describe in the following words:
I use HP Elitebook 850 G5, Samsung 970 EVO M2, Bitlocker is disabled.
I had ATI 2018 and 2019 on board, in the moment i'm back to ATI 2018, whereas the failure are in both programs ident.
Problem A:
I tried to start an image of the PC, target is an external USB-HDD.
Acronis stops working at 441 MB (of 52 GB) and after app. 2-3 h stopping time a failure popup appears, which says, that ATI cannot create a Volume Snapshot.
Problem B:
The link, which promises more information or help, is empty, which means, Acronis has no more information about that.
Please note, that *all* other programs i tested, where definitely capable to do this job without any problems!
(Same hardware!)
Please can you give me the information what going wrong here!?
THX on advance, MfD

Hi Steve,
THX, I'll start the Acronis VSS and yes it runs with admin-privilegs.
- During runnuing the VSS - do I have to plug in the Target? (USB-HDD)
- Must ATI be stopped, or must it run?

Manfred, the VSS Doctor should be run when ATI is not active (not making a backup), but does not need the Target drive to be connected. VSS is primarily used on your Source drives, not the target.

Hi Steve,
now VSS Doctor was running, and as expected there appeared two errors. (See screenshot)
The event log has about 600 pages!?
What now???
There is no fix-it-button!
Steve, do you have any idea how to fix this problem?
Should I provide here the report?
I'm desperated...

Manfred, the two failed VSS writers do not look to be those used by ATI, so may not be relevant to this issue here. Did you use Run as Administrator when running the VSS Doctor tool?
I would recommend doing a full system restart to see if that cleans up anything for this problem, especially if Windows has been 'up' for a long time with Fast Start enabled.
Another option here is to use the option as described in KB 59440: Acronis True Image 2017: 'Snapshot for backup' option overview - which applies to later versions too, and switch to using a different snapshot option for the backup.

I once more ran VSS Doctor explicit by staring with right-click-run-as-admin, no changes.
I'd prefer *not* to change the snap-shot service, because Acronis should have "thought about" to take VSS from Windows.
I've a complete different question:
How can I renew VSS built in job in Windows 10?
I run my SSD from a clone of another SSD mady by EaseUs ToDo Backup.
Can this be a part of the Problem??
For now I'll try to change the VSS Service, if this can fix the problem, then it should be clear if WIN-VSS-Service is the reason for this problem.
I'll come back here...

So, I'm back again.
After changing the VSS-Machine zu Acronis SnapShot, it worked fine. (Screenshot)
BUT
How to fix VSS-Machine?
Can i reinstall it in Windows?
Do you have any idea how to fix this task?
Acronis says, thar changing the VSS-Machine will end up, that the omage will *not* boot!
This is not accepable!

Manfred, please see the following webpages for help with VSS issues.
VSS Error Troubleshooting Guide
How to troubleshoot Microsoft Volume Shadow copy Service errors
Acronis says, that changing the VSS-Machine will end up, that the image will *not* boot!
This is not acceptable!
The above is not a true statement or copy of the Acronis warning. The ATI 2018 User Guide states:
- VSS
Warning! This is the only recommended option for backing up your system. Your computer may not start after recovery from a backup created with a different snapshot type.
This option is default for disk-level and the Entire PC backups, and guarantees data consistency in the backup.
- Acronis snapshot
A snapshot will be created with the Acronis driver used in previous versions of Acronis True Image.
The key point here is that snapshot is required to capture critical OS programs & files that are locked when in use, thus the default snapshot method should be VSS, however, in earlier versions of ATI prior to 2015, VSS was not used at all. The Acronis snapshot method is the one that those older versions of ATI used instead of VSS, and this does still work today. If you were to create a disk backup of the OS drive with no snapshot method used, then that would be very unlikely to be able to work or boot if recovered, as would be missing critical files etc.

Hi Steve,
I came to the point, that all actions to repair the system found no solution.
Then I started the Media Creation Tool and "updated" the system unter keeping the files and apps.
It seemed to new-install the build 1809, after that all things running well!
VSS-Doc doesn't find any failure anymore, and the backup is working well.
However, trust is not back fully...
Previously I'll set back my machine in app. one week by using the bootable USB.
Then we will see...

Manfred, thanks for the update - doing an 'in-place' upgrade of Windows can often resolve some strange problems such as this and is something I have needed to do in the past to resolve issues that were completely unrelated to using ATI.
