Strange problem with ATI 2018

Thread needs solution

Hi folks,

I have a dual boot computer with windows 10 (ATI 2018 installed) and windows 7 (ATI 2010 installed)

I only make full system backup of each partition usually with ATI 2010, because I love the GUI so simple to use compared to ATI 2018, and everything usually works fine.

Ok my main OS is windows 10 now, and I figured rather than boot into windows 7 and use ATI 2010 I would try ATI 2018 from within windows 10 itself, selecting only to make a full backup of windows 10.

I am running into a strange problem here, I create the image with ATI 2018 of windows 10 which completes ok, but the backup of windows 10 made with ATI 2018 is about 14gb less than if I was to make it with ATI 2010 within windows 7. Its about 93gb with ATI 2010 and 79gb with ATI  2018. I am using medium compression with both ATI's

Now  when I run the backup of windows 10 made with AT 2018, ATI obviously windows 10 will reboot to complete the recovery, and here is where the really strange problem arises.

When recovery is complete I boot into window 10 again, a lot of my desktop icons are missing and overall about 14gb of data is missing from the recovered partition.

I had a look at the file exclusions in ATI 2018 and though there are a lot there the tick box to include them in backup is not, so very curious to know what is happening here.

Of course I can continue to use ATI 2010 to make my backups but it would be nice to find out what really is happening here, and why ATI is not making the full backup of windows 10.

As stated I have selected in Options to make a full backup only.

Any light thrown on what is happening here very much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Joe

Joe, strictly speaking, Acronis does not support dual-boot systems, but as both you & I know from personal experience, you can use ATI with these providing you do so with care. (My own laptop is actually triple-boot with Win 10 Insiders / Win 10 1809 & Ubuntu 18.04).

It has been a very long time since I used ATI 2010 so have forgotten all the differences in how that presents the options etc for making backups, and my remaining Windows 7 systems are all on ATI 2018 if I remember correctly!

The log files for your backups would be the starting point for any analysis of why you are seeing a difference in size between the backup images created.  There are some differences in the exclusions that I can think of, i.e. Windows 10 has the swapfile.sys which isn't found on 7 etc, so would be excluded by ATI 2018 but not by 2010.

There shouldn't be any missing desktop icons after doing a recovery unless those icons are linked to resources that weren't included in the backup?
