true image - clone disk
i have tried and tried but the software refuses to clone my hdd to my sdd... what do i have to do? i have a 500 gb hdd and a 256 sdd; yes it is smaller but the hdd is less than 1/2 used and should fit. I tried excluding probably 30 gb in files and it still wont work and tells me "failed to move the selected data. Make sure that your new hard drive is not smaller than your old one and that your partitions do not contain errors. You can check for errors and correct them using a special utility". What does this mean? this software will not work if the new one is smaller? you can tell it to size accordingly by the clone mode. What am i missing with this? thanks

thanks for the reply. My hdd is 464gb capacity with 230gb used. my crucial ssd is 255gb and was formatted prior to the clone attempt with no data on it. I excluded my hdd downloads folder which eliminated 62.5gb of data. when using acronis tru disk i tried automatic and manual clone modes and each produced the same result. thanks

Run chkdsk /r on your HDD from an admin command prompt. Since your Windows install is on the HDD the command will not run until the computer is rebooted, you will be notified of this after you run the command.
After the command run you will see output indicating the results including what if any errors were found and if they were fixed. I suspect you will have some.
Once the above is completed try to run the clone again. Automatic mode is preferred.

After formatting, my own 250GB SSD is not much over 230GB. So, cloning 230GB from a 500GB HDD to a 255GB SSD is a real-l-ly tight fit. I have had these operations fail over the years due to "unmovable" data sections on the source partitions. The old XP defragmenter interface would show these on the storage map as green blocks. But, I don't know how to analyze, visualize, or even detect them in Windows 10. Anyway, if an unmovable data section is out much past the 230GB marker, that could (maybe, possibly) be a problem.
